Hi, I found this little snuff bottle at a flea market and love its detail. It is made of glass ( overlayed) and has some Chinese writing on it. Only thing is that it has a resin or plastic top which leads me to believe it isn't very old- can anyone help clarify this ? 😬

Since this is your first post here, welcome!

I am of the view that your overlay bottle is modern.

Dear Chaz,

The way it works on the Forum is, FIRST introduce yourself in the Introductions section.
Then, feel free to post photos of bottles, AFTER you read how to do it correctly. Your photos are impossible
to view. Please follow the rules.
Thank you.
And welcome,
Joey

Hi Giovanni, I have now replaced the oversized images with smaller ones, sorry about that. Hope that might help you elucidate the origins of this piece.

Dear Chaz,
thank you and welcome here; this is the right place to learn about snuff bottles.
I am not a big expert, but I agree with George, your bottle is not to be considered an old one, and its quality is so and so. Not bad, modern bottles in general are worst. Since you mentioned the stopper, be aware that in judging the bottles the stopper is not an important point, because they were changed and/or placed by someone at any time.
If you start to look at the result of the major Auction houses, you will see how a good bottle should look. In particular, the style of the dragons is different than that of your bottle and the carving is much finer quality. More smooth, more finished.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Hi Chaz,

Firstly, welcome to the forum....THE forum for anyone interested in snuff bottles!

I agree that your bottle is modern. I bought a bunch of these around 20 years ago for $20 to $25 each. Some of the better carved ones are OK as 'shelf fillers' if you want to make a crowded display of assorted bottles.  Wink

But be aware of the overlays on clear or bubble-suffused glass. The glass-making process used for many of these bottles is not stable. Most of the ones I purchased began cracking spontaneously after 5-6 years. Be warned...!

Dear Chaz,

No harm done. I myself have Asperger's, and don't post photos by myself.  Grin
George or Steven help me - I send them the photos, and they size them right.
When I tried to view your bottle by tapping on the photo, it was so frustrating because it was
way too big.
But George, Steven or Giovanni can help you.
And welcome again.
Best,
Joey
