Hi folks,

I've been looking at this bottle for a while on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252398664328?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I was just wondering what your opinions on the age of the bottle might be? From my newbie perspective the bottle shape seems right for an older bottle. Also, the seller mentions the bottle is well hollowed, but the bottom 1/4 of the bottle is not hollowed to give it some weight as the jet material is naturally very light. Lastly, I find the look of this bottle really appealing... I am not actually thinking of buying though - just really interested to get some more informed viewpoints...

The shape looks 'right' for 19th century. But I would have to examine the details (mouth, lip, foot rim) to say for certain whether it was old or new. Not able to do so from the photos being offered.

Thanks for the opinions guys - appreciated Smiley Shame the pictures of the mouth, foot etc aren't clearer as the material is so dark. I'm tempted to email the seller with a lower offer, but highly cautious buying off ebay as I could go to a respected dealer, handle the bottle, have a chat and be far more confident in my purchase.... I love the contrast with the black bottle and red lid here.

If it will help a little in your deciding to make an offer, I will add that it does certainly appear to be jet, but be sure to ask the seller about the weight... It should be super light..  Also, if jet, I would label it a "hard" grade jet over "soft".. I do not see any inclusions or surface pitting, but the pics are a bit unfocused..

I do like the bottle very much... The shape is lovely...  If I were to make a serious offer, it would be in the 400.00 range after confirming it is actually jet..

Another method to confirm aside from weight, is to lightly run it across a piece of unglazed porcelain.. It should leave a brown mark/line on the porcelain.

Good luck !

Dear Luke,

We don't call it a 'lid'; we call it a 'stopper'. Though I do have a lid on my rubbish bin... Grin Roll Eyes
Best,
Joey

Much appreciated folks - will let you know if anything comes of this. Really interesting thread there George. Tom is very lucky to have aquired that old bottle. I know it was a while ago, but congratulations Tom!

Thanks for the pointer on the lid/stopper lingo Joey, but if you do have any coral rubbish bins please know that I'm also on the market too for such an item  Grin

Dear Luke,

I wish I had a coral rubbish bin lid myself!

Tell me, is the foot flat or is there a raised foot rim?
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

If you go to the eBay link you'll see a shot of the base. The bottle has a raised foot with a solid flat centre (i.e. flat and no raised rim).

Best,
Tom

Have one more look Tom.. The pic is a bit out of focus, but to me it looks like concave base..

Yes, I agree with Joey... Would like to see a raised foot rim as well..  I think am ok with believing a 19th jet having this flat base, but not sure if it is a deal breaker between 19th and Early 20th..
