Dear Members,

I came across this bottle for sale and was wondering if you have any information about it. Is it late 20th Century? I don't know anything about calligraphy on snuff bottles, but I think the decoration is too modern, the colors too bold, and the 3 dimensional perspective is modern.

Thank you

Brian

I am not excited about the painting, but not bad either... I would have thought the same thing in regards to appearing modern.. Mid 20th..  Yet the bottle itself appears older.. At least in the second pic... The first pic makes the bottle look Mid 20th..

I think the calligraphy is real nice..  I would buy it...

Lets see if someone can help with an artists name for you...

Dear Brian,

The backgrounds you use are very counter-productive to enabling us to focus on, much less analyse, the bottles.
PLEASE, in future, a solid background, NOT this type of patterned material.
I agree with George about the period.
Thank you,
Joey

Dear Joey and George,

Thank you for your comments. I agree the calligraphy looks nice and is what drew me to the bottle. I didn't take the picture, so I didn't have much control over the background that was used. I would not have used that background.

So, date wise, we're probably looking at mid-20th C or earlier (the person selling it says late 19th/early 20th)?

Thank you,

Brian

Brian,

The painting style and pigment use on this bottle looks post 1970's to me.

Dear Brian,

Fair enough. I have seen other bottles with proper plain backgrounds.
I agree with Charll - post 1970s or even post 1980s.
Best,
Joey

I will agree with the 1970's dating as well...

I suspect a different artist who did not specialized in calligraphy did the painting, and a calligrapher did the his work separate..

Can anyone make out an artists name ?  I like the bottle for the calligraphy..

Dear Members,

Here are some pics of this bottle away from the hideous background. Can anyone identify the artist name?

Thank you

Brian

This has been over for a while. What I was able to find out is that it is signed Xu Ye, painted 1979. The artist's full name is  Zheng Xuye. She began painting in 1971. From what I've seen, she is a very good artists with good calligraphy. Here are a couple of examples I was able to find.

Were you the lucky winner for the bottle Brian ?   It felt like it was a more modern bottle. So the 1979 date now makes sense to me.. But nice job figuring out the artist !  And a wonderful artist she is indeed !  A real nice bottle..

George,

I might have been, but I accidentally slept through the end of the auction.  Sad
