Dear Members,

I purchased this bottle at a local shop recently. It looks like white jade or perhaps bowenite. It is very smooth and well-hollowed. I would think it is very modern. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Brian

Hi Brian,

It looks like Glass more than jade to me. Are you sure its Jade?  I am happy that if you can prove that I am wrong.

Brian,

If you have a scale you can do a specific gravity test to be sure.
Here are the directions:

http://www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/jhbnyc/articles/specific_gravity.htm

Jadeite will have a specific gravity of around 3.3
Nephrite will have a specific gravity of around 2.95

Any lower than that and it's probably glass

And another quick thing I do is look at it with a 10x jewelers loupe - any bubbles means it's glass

Hope that helps,
Cathy

Here are some more pictures. This appears to be the extent to which my camera can give detail. There are some slight inclusion and no air bubbles under magnification.

Hi Brian,

It is hard to see bubbles in opaque glass. Specific gravity test is best

Another possibility is white quartzite. Snuff bottles of this stone began appearing in the 1980s. It is a cryptocrystalline type of quartz, often extremely white, and is quite popular for kitchen counter tops in SE Asia.   Wink

Yes!!!!!!! And I believe there are a number of contemporary stone and stone composite bottles out there on the market that are made from countertop scrap material.  I'm pretty sure I have an example.
