I am taking a hint from Brian because you guys have saved him from making bad purchases.

I would appreciate an opinion on these two inside painted bottles.
I am afraid one of them has no calligraphy at all, but I suspect that the bottle may be amber. One of the pictures shows the bottle backlit and it almost appears like there is a little crizzling to me. Regardless of whether it's amber or not, I like the painting. I tend to like the ones with people more than landscapes.

On the other, I have tried in vain to figure out the calligraphy - with no luck, but the style reminds me of some of the Ye family bottles or YST bottles, and so would like to see what you guys think.

The one with calligraphy is signed with the name 薛成彩 which reads Xue Chengcai. I have never heard of this artist before but with a little googling I found one of his works being listed at Bonhams before..

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22495/lot/61/

Seems to be a modern IP artist. Of course, without knowing much about him, I can't tell whether yours is really done by the same artist..

Cathy,

Can you not ask the seller if the first one is amber or amber-colour glass? From the photo it looks more like glass to me, but the seller must know the difference, even with his eyes shut.

Hi Tom,

Yes can try to get an answer. Good idea.

What do you think of the painting?

I read the thread here on Xue Chengcai, and saw where his father was Xue Shaofu, and so I started looking him up too, and found these bottles attributed to him that bear a resemblance to this one - in my opinion of course.

Cathy,

I don't collect inside painted bottles, so will leave comments on the paintings to others.

Xue Chengchai is still considered a middle period painter. Some of his fathers bottles are dated mid 1890s. Also true Amber inside painted bottles are extremely rare as this was a more expensive material ,even more so than rock crystal. 99.999 percent of all Amber colored bottles are just plain glass and often are recycled medicine bottles.

I didn't know that about recycled medicine bottles - that makes much more sense. The amber colored bottle looks to me like it has some age. Also I was wondering about the colored bottles in general and it seems like they were very popular in the early 1900s - does this observation of mine have any basis in fact?

Cathy :

IMO....the Xue ChengCai bottle is quite a good one at a correct price.....

The amber looking bottle I think is glass, and for me.... I will give it a miss...

Good luck
