I have been collecting Asian art and antiques for several years. I have some experience collecting Chinese and Japanese porcelains, jade, ivory (when it was legal in my state), and other items. I particularly enjoy Japanese Satsuma pottery. I am now starting to collect snuff bottles. I look forward to being part of the community. I am currently located in Redlands, California. I recently graduated from law school and am waiting to get admitted to practice law now.

Dear 'Bokaba',

Welcome to the Forum. Is that really your name, or do you want to let us know your first (or given) name, so we can refer to you that way?
Best,
Joey

Dear Bokaba, (is that how you want us to address you?)

A warm Welcome. It is good to have a diversity in collecting while I'm not into other art except snuff bottles and things related to it.

Cheers,
YT

Brian,

Welcome to the Forum.  My parents were collectors of Asian art, antiques, and collectibles.  Primarily Chinese and Japanese porcelains and pottery.  Though my dad has passed away, my mother still has their fairly extensive satsuma collection.  That's how I got introduced to the field and was collecting satsuma for a while, but ultimately realized it was going to take up to much space.  Though I purchased my first snuff bottle in 1979 when just out of college, I did not seriously start focusing on this area till 2005.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum! I am new too, and can tell you that you have come to the right place to learn because there are some very knowledgeable collectors here.

Instead of building on my collection of mostly very bad bottles, I'm now trying to build my library, so I hope you learn from my mistake and buy some books before bottles. A very good place to start is Bob Stevens "Collectors Book of Snuff Bottles" and Lilla Perry's "Chinese Snuff Bottles."

There's also a very good web site that has a lot of books on it -  http://www.e-yaji.com/
I read Henry Hitt's book there and then ordered a copy, and it has the whole Meriem Collection on there, http://www.e-yaji.com/past%20auctions/meriem/main/index.asp
as well as a lot of other great resources.
