Dear YT,

You are 90% correct, but he DID have many of his compositions, most of which I understand from great experts in Chinese Art (such as Steven Little and Yang Boda), were quite mediocre, if that; engraved on fine earlier Qing, and even Ming back to Tang objects, especially in Quartz and Jade.
And he was a great supporter of the Arts at the expense of his people's welfare, but that is also wrong.
I definitely admire a lot that the Qianlong Emperor did, but am bothered by a lot else he did.
No-one's perfect.  Wink
Thank you for the correction; later collectors (myself among them, I'm sad to admit Embarrassed; I was slavishly copying what I'd learned about Chinese collectors. Thank G-D, I'd stopped before I started collecting serious Chinese paintings.), did a lot more damage to the esthetics of the objects, as well.
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

Actually the blame is more on the subsequent owners after QianLong where they also leave their marks. Look at some of the best paintings and see them covered all over with red chops indicating their provenance up till today.

On the contrary, the paintings by famous artist which have only a QianLong chop and poem sells at sky high prices with even museum wanting to acquire them.

QianLong was blamed more for his emphasis on culture and leaving a great empire with decendants that neglected military.

Cheers,
YT

Dear Joey,

I should treat myself for getting such a high approval rate from you  Cheesy

QianLong Emperor has felt more real and culturally superior than any other emperors by having left the most amount of fine artifacts behind. People can easily relate to him when they admire these antiques including me.
Sources has pointed to a real fact that most of the eight nation plunderers do not understand about Chinese works. They took what they think are pretty and burned the rest. Most of the calligraphy were burned as these to them are not pretty. Assuming this fact, most of the few thousands poem by QianLong were destroyed. What's left may be interpreted in an unfair manner to him.

Dear all, please feel free to correct me.

Cheers,
YT

Dear YT,

Having owned a lot of Qianlong period Imperial wares (and I still own 30 or more), I also admire the man for the beauty he brought into the world. But he also defaced a lot of earlier treasures. I admire the Kangxi emperor more, because he contributed to culture to a great extent, but during most of his reign also focused on improving his nation, by strengthening it economically, increasing its development and wealth, and also militarily.
Best,
Joey

Dear Pin,

Then my vote is with Hong Taiji. He has a much bigger and stronger army than KangXi and were instrumental in the form of the Qing Dynasty until he died before the last Shanghai Guan. Didn't enjoy much did he.

Dear YT,
thank you; in fact, in my ignorance, I never heard before about Hong Taiji. I thought that the first Qing Emperor has been Shunzhi.
Talking about porcelain only, my preferred periods of the Qing dynasty are Shunzhi, Kangxi and Yongzheng. Qianlong has really nice pieces but they start to be too much "perfect" to my taste.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Giovanni,

You are welcome.

With regards to Qianlong pieces, imagine this 18.5cm vase to be only 4cm snuff bottle. http://catalog.digitalarchives.tw/item/00/33/49/cf.html
It is no longer a perfection and rather an art form to the highest degree.

Cheers,
YT
