I can not find the post from back when I first saw Curt post this, and just wanted to share this unusual shaped bottle once more as we have many new members who may have seen something like this before..

Would really like to be able and place a date on it ..

Camellia Green Glaze Porcelain. Gifted to me by a fellow collector from Hong Kong, Curt Lam. Thanks again Curt !

Round and 2 3/4" tall. If you look closely, there is a bat painted on the recessed base ..

Unknown date..

Dear George,
I don’t know about the age, but I am confident that it is not recent. I think that 19th century is probable, early 20th at late, not after. But I can say that this is not camellia leaf green glaze, which is real green, all relatively fine crackled and that doesn’t change the color in the ridges as we see in your bottle. At least in the pictures your bottle has a turquoise tinge that is not compatible with camellia leaf glaze. It seems also dirty in the pictures. I do clean all my pieces with acetone and/or detergents. Dirty is not sign of age.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear George,

I agree with Giovanni, that the bottle is 19th C. or very early 20th C. (ie., ca.1820-1910).
I think the wide band is for gluing on a label, and this was a medicine bottle. Snuff was also considered a medicine, though more an all-purpose type of 'tonic'; but the Literati and the wealthy would have had fine quality vessels for all uses. And I think this was for a powder which needed instructions in its use, or warnings.

Beautiful bottle. Congratulations. I don't remember the last time it was posted.
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,
I was wondering why that shape. Your explication sounds very good, I didn't thought about that. You are right I think, very good.
Kind regards
Giovanni

It's a possibility, except that the lower ridge just below where the label might have been meant to be, is rounded as compared to being almost squared off at the top ridge.  Probably not a big deal breaker for being a possible label location, just seems like both ridges would be equally squared..

Dear George,

You could be correct, but as long as there is a cutoff to mark the label area, I doubt that would be a problem. And what seems logical to you or me, might not to a Chinese craftsman or apothecary. And if there is a difference, it is easier to identify the way to hold it in the dark.
Best,
Joey
