Dear members,

Perhaps I am asking for something that is not practical, but is it at all possible that the more knowledgeable members of this site could provide some information about certain shapes or the like, that match certain dates.

What I find very confusing is when one or more of our learned members says that a snuff is say, between 1780 to 1830 or the like. Such comments are obviously made with certain knowledge or qualified reasoning, but it is not always clear in many of the threads where this occurs, why or how, these dates are justified or reached.

I fully appreciate that to date certain snuffs properly may involve many aspects of the snuff and that all those features, without exception, need to apply before a date is reached, but are there certain pointers regarding the shape, height, weight, thickness, substance etc. that usually applies to specific dates. An example of this is I recently learnt through the threads (because I recently acquired one) was that a Tigers Eye snuff is thought to be dated no earlier than late 19th or early 20th century.

There must be many examples which members can quote or theories they may have and it might even spark off interesting debate as to the authenticity of such claims.

Thank you all for your kind consideration to this request.

Paul

I understand what you are asking.. Every medium that snuff bottles are made of will have different features that stand out. But they are very different between mediums. So to answer your question there is not a set or list of specific features that can be applied overall to the many various mediums.

Examples like your Tiger Eye bottle question can include coming down to knowing when, and where the mineral was first mined and available to carvers. Then any number of or all features including thickness of walls, overall shape, foot rim, height, etc. are looked at.

Hi Paul,

I am a complete newbie to collecting, and like you have so many questions. I just read Lilla Perry's book "Chinese Snuff Bottles - The Adventures & Studies of a Collector" and it was so enlightening!

One thing she includes is the most common bottle shapes.

It's an excellent book that answers many of my questions and it's $3.95 on Amazon - you can't beat that.

Hello George and cshapiro,

Thank you both very much for your replies.

I do understand what you are saying George, I was just trying to see if there were any standard rules of thumb that could be followed. I suppose there is no substitute for detailed study.

That book looks amazing value cshapiro, I shall order a copy today - thank you.

Kind regards,

Paul
