Since am comparing horses, lets get on the horse of our choice, gallop over to, and drop into the Ma Family studio Cheesy to compare this similar 1896 Ma Shaohsuan/Shaoxuan horse on quartz painting. It looks closer than that of Pin's Gui Xianggu example .. The horse is painted very similar, and as well pointed to the right. The tree without knots, and background mountain shading are a bit similar too.. As well, the grass is similar.

I found a better pic of the Ma Shaohsuan/Shaoxuan bottle, so edited the previous post by deleting the pic and adding the new one. Can now see that the eye is actually not slanted up and down as I thought it appeared in the previous pic I used.

One thing having a hard time connecting this to being Gui Xianggu painted, is the base of the trees where the main roots connect to the trunk for his landscape scenes. He seems to have painted that similar to other ZLY, or YZS style/influenced painters with a shaded upside down V shape as compared to a single "slit" ( GXG example attached ) when compared to the style of Ma Shaoxuan. Except when the tree is in the very forefront of the scene.

At least this has been my experience while searching as best I can. Some examples within the book, "Ma Shaoxuan, A Biography and Study by Ma Zengshan", #2, and #13.

Except for when the tree is in the very forefront of the scene.

Does anyone have or know of examples for either Ma Zhenquan, Ma Shaoxuan's Grandson, or Kuang Chi, brother to Ma Shaoxuan ?

Looking for further landscape examples from artist influenced by and closely connected to Ma Shaoxuan.

Dear George,

I must reread Ma Zhenquan's book. I don't remember that Ma Shaoxuan's brother/s painted as well.
I just knew about his nephew, Ma Shaoxian (Ma Guoting).
Best,
Joey

I have the book, but I must be continually overlooking the second brothers name. I am only seeing one brothers name,  Kuang Chi.  But the book mentions two brothers that both painted.  I am re-reading yet again to see if his name is mentioned.

I don't really care how well either painted. I am looking for clues..

Dear All,

Ma Guangjia was Ma Shaoxuan's given name. Ma Shaoxuan was his art name.
An 'elder brother' Zhengyun is mentioned in a bottle from 1894, but that could be just an honorific, and not mean an actual brother.
Best,
Joey

Hi George,

On this I can actually contribute! I just read the book - and on page 24 it says Ma Shaoxuan together with his two older brothers began studying how to paint inside snuff bottles.
It then goes on to talk about how they discovered the art together.
On page 14 it mentions the two older brothers died in 1949 and 1953.
It mentions his fathers brothers eldest son was Ma Zengxiang
Other than that I can't quickly find a mention of the brothers name, but will look for it.

Dear Cathy,

    Good news/bad news.
Good news: Thank you. I found the quotes (p.24, p.14)
Bad News: The author is Ma Shaoxuan's GRANDSON. So he is referring to his father and to his uncle, NOT to his grandfather's brothers. And Ma Zengxiang is from his own generation (ie., his cousin).
Best,
Joey

Thank you both for taking the time to read through and share what you found..

Joey of course is correct in his understanding of what Ma Zengxiang is writing..

So although you both also saw reference to Ma Sahoxuan having two brothers, like me, am only seeing one name for one of the two brothers, Kuang Chi.

I'm quite a bit late to the party here—only 4 years haha—but I have a bottle that might be able to add something to the discussion.

Here is a bottle from my grandfather's collection that is attributed to Ye Zhongsan titled "Escorting Sister To Wedding". I find the similarities between it and the pictures in the original post quite remarkable. The woman's faces are nearly identical, the horse's hooves are identical. That said, the horse's mane's are entirely different (this one look braided possibly), and the woman's robes are a it different.

I'd love to hear any comments.

Brian

Dear Brian,

Yes, that is a bottle by Ye Zhongsan the elder.
The subject of Zhong Kui the Demon Queller, escorting his sister to her wedding,
accompanied by demon slaves he's compelled, who do the 'heavy lifting'.

I tried to compare the details but for some reason, the photos are covered by a 'Photobucket' sign.
Best,
Joey

Dear Brian,

Yes your grandfather had a good eye for quality and I agree with Joey's description of your Ye Zhongsan IPSB.  The quality of the painting would certainly lead us to think that it was done by Ye Zhongsan the elder, but unless I am mistaken it is dated RenXu for 1922.  Generally we call most snuff bottles dated later than 1915 Ye Family or Ye workshop since by that time Ye Zhongsan's sons were working with him.

Best regards,

Tom B.
