Dear All,

I would like to share a lacquer snuff bottle.

I did the acetone test so I think it is not resin. On the other hand, I couldnt see any layers under the loupe.

Could you please share your thoughts on whether you think this is a genuine carved bottle or just a modern fake?

I like it very much and have a hunch, but will let others experienced help..

Do I see wood grain on the base of the bottle ? Where the paint has peeled ?

Yes, I am intrigued by the wood on the base whereas on the top it is brass or copper underneath.

I forgot to add: it measures 6.8 cm without the stopper.

Dear Marco and all,

Sorry I missed this thread.  Your bottle is made of carved lacquer even though you can't detect the multiple layers of lacquer.  On my first carved lacquer SB I had to hunt the entire bottle with my loupe to find an area that had been cut through the layers without that area being polished afterwards.  I didn't have my USB microscope back then so I couldn't photograph them, but I can remember being delighted to find the layers in the area marked with a green arrow in the following image.

By the way I just read you believe this is lacquer over a wooden core?

Yes, I am intrigued by the wood on the base whereas on the top it is brass or copper underneath.

I am fairly certain that it is a copper alloy core

Dear Tom,

Thanks for taken a look at the bottle.

You are right. The base is actually copper alloy. I have just scratched it with a knife.

My USB microscope is not longer working, so it is very hard to find this layers.

Do you think it is a 19th century bottle?

Regards,

Marcos

Most similar SB's that I have seen are simply described as 19th century or in some cases late Qing.
