Maybe something like the original stoppers cork was actually made as a one piece stone stopper ? Then this might be meant like you say to protect the stone cork from the bottle .. ?

I do not know.. I sent a message to the owner ( I believe he is the owner ) asking again about it. I had asked a couple weeks ago as well with same non reply.
