A bit of an unusual stopper. Not sure if it is porcelain or bakelite. Not sure bakelite would be glazed .. Would sure like to replace the spoon with a nicer one, but afraid to attempt something like drilling it out. Even though it is wood and not cork..

This came along with a bottle I bought for a friend.

Interesting item, I like a lot, and I think that is not bakelite.

I agree with Albert - it is not bakelite if it has a glaze coating.

But why change the spoon? It's narrow scoop is functional and consistent with the shape and size of the bottle.

Dear George,

Is the bottle glass? What are the dimensions?

It looks like glass sbs made in the 1950s/1960s in the shape of Chinese cabbage, but those almost invariably were in light green and white glass. I bought 2 in the early 1970s; one in a flea market in Toronto, in 1971 for about CAD$20 or CAD$25; and a second, slightly different, from YF Yang when he was at Ocean Terminal in 1973 or 1974, for US$28 or US$32. He always had very odd (to me) prices, since he was converting into USD from HKD.

Similarly, for years (1979-1990, at least), I used to buy bottles from YF for US$1,080. I must have bought 2 dozen at that price over that time period. Why not US$1,100? Or US$1,050?  I never bargained with Mr. Yang - either I bought it or I didn't buy it.

Years later, looking at me like I was a bit soft in the head, Rick explained very patiently, as one would to an imbecile, that it was due to the HKD price.   Duh...   Grin Roll Eyes

Best,
Joey
