I've had this set of four bottles since 1999 but I didn't display them when I first started showing my bottles here because I felt the quality was not good enough for such an august group of connoisseurs. But I've changed my mind.

Not about this group of course, about the quality of the bottles. I have to keep reminding myself these are painted in reverse on a canvas only 4cm by 5cm and through the neck of a bottle - quite an achievement, so the quality is not that bad.

And the subject is good too - a racy story from the Five Dynasties period about the private life of a court favourite, depicted here in a later copy of Gu Hongzhong's painting and for show in the Palace Museum in Beijing (all info from Wikipedia)

and here are my bottles. Bottle 1, watching a 'friend' playing a pipa

playing the drum while watching a dancing girl and taking a break

watching more entertainment

and finally choosing a 'friend'. Goodnight.

A rather better set of five bottles by Wang Qian on the same subject appears in A New Look page 206

My set were painted in 1998, But I can't read the artist - anyone?

Hi Geoff

I have a similar set of 5 bottles painted by Shi Maoru (史茂 如) from the Ji School.

Enjoy!

Hi Richard and Geoff,
Interesting comparison. Wonderful scenes, from a racy story!
Richard, is half of the last pair missing from your post?

Hi Richard,

I'm only seeing 9 images. The last one, number 169, is on its own.

Regards,
Tom

Thanks Richard, I think yours are better on quality but mine are good for colour.

Anyway, I've now decided to put them on display if I can find a space. Not sure what my wife will say when I tell her the story behind them. But she can't complain - she was with me when I bought them.

Thanks also to Peter for finding the artist's full name and some background as a past student of Zhang Ru Cai. Does that tie in with the 'One Bottle Studio" source?
