Bonham's New York to sell the collections of Joanna Lau Sullivan and Marcia Howard.

Chinese Snuff Bottles from Two Private American Collections, kicks off the series of sales on March 14 at 10 a.m. The auction features more than 100 significant snuff bottles from the collections of Joanna Lau Sullivan and Marcia Howard. Both collectors were actively involved with the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society for many years and the Sullivan family heavily supported the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Among the treasures offered in this sale are important jadeite bottles, early glass bottles and an excellent selection of inside-painted snuff bottles by one of China's leading artists of interior bottle-painting, Wang Xisan (born 1938), acquired directly from the artist.

Dear Tom,

These two sales in New York combine with Barron Part two should create a big buzz.

Anyone going for the preview?

Cheers,

Dear Tom,

Thanks for the background note on the two collectors. It's a pity the online catalog doesn't say which lots belonged to which lady.
For instance, it would be interesting to know which of the two collectors bought directly from Wang Xisan.
Perhaps the printed catalog will be more informative.

Dear Tom,

Thank you for posting the link. I also got an email from Bonham's with a link, and like Tom L., wondered why there was no attribution of bottle to collector.

I assumed that everyone got an email, but as a friend, a Marine (USMC) captain, once  taught me:
"Don't Assume; it makes an 'Ass' of 'u' (you) and 'me'"!  Grin  Roll Eyes

Best,
Shabbat Shalom,

For those interested in which bottles are from Marcia's collection, and which from Joanna's:
(Joey)

Dear Joey: We saw the bottles yesterday (28.Feb. -Joey). What a great select group. To
answer your question, bottles #6001-6050 are Marcia's and #6051-6102 are
Joanna's. Wish I could afford a few. Vince

Dear Joey,

The printed catalogue arrived at my home yesterday. It is clearly split into two parts, each preceded by a short biography of the collector whose bottles follow. The online catalogue unfortunately doesn't provide this extra information.

Regards,
Tom

All

Here is the link to the E-Catalog.  It is the same as the printed catalog that many of us are just receiving in the mail.  See access to E-Catalog in blue text in the top right of page and simply left click to gain access to the catalog.

Dear Charll,

I've not yet received the printed catalogue from Bonham's. Presumably it will arrive soon, and hopefully before the auction!  Roll Eyes Grin

Thanks Charll,

Yes, they appear to have three platforms for disseminating auction information:
1. the online browsing service, which is interactive, allowing one to flag specific lots and place online bids
2. the printed catalogue
3. the e-catalogue, which is a digital version of number 2 - read-only, no interaction possible

I got my copies of the 2 Bonham auctions on 14.March. The only Wang Xisan which tempts me is
lot 6052, the winter landscape in the smoky quartz bottle.
Best,
Joey
