Wonderful bottle !  Looks to be quartz too...  I recognize the scene in the first picture.. The other where everyone is indoors, could be a bit of a rare example of YZ the Elder painting the scene.. At least I do not recall seeing this particular scene painted by him.. I will look through Apricot Grove to see how many examples there might be..

Congratulations !

Have not looked through every single book, but Apricot Grove series usually shows something..

I only found a couple of examples showing this scene, dated 1916, and then the only other example I see has an interesting twist. This 1916 crystal ( pic below ) painted in pure Ye family style with subjects which are theirs alone, but bearing the name Ma Shaoxuan. It goes on to say no other reason can be for this as the only other time any member of the family signed with a name other than one of his own, or that of ZLY , was when he used what was presumably the name of the client who was to give the bottle to a third party.

I am having a hard time making out the date on your bottle, but it looks like it could be 1916 ?

Hi Geoorge

It should be 1928, the earth dragon year.

Hi Pat

It's roughly 6.8cm... Slightly smaller size.

FYI Most of us forget that 2.5 inches or 6.8cm was rather standard and average for size for those days for the top painters in Tier 1 where Ye and studio/family belongs.  Tier 2 (Meng Zishou, Yan Yutian, Yong Shoutian, others) liked to take advantage of a larger canvas to paint in.  Below that would be smallish.

Dear Pin,

Pat is 100% correct. I fell in love with 2-2.5 inch tall X 1-1.5 inch wide bottles, which felt 'right' in my hand. Too big a bottle would make the muscles of my hand cramp.

That is pretty much a standard sized Middle Period bottle, certainly of the first tier artists.
Best,
Joey

There is a bottle with exactly the same scene coming up for auction at Bonhams NY on 14 March.
