I don't generally get excited by inside painted bottles of the very modern period, unless it's a landscape by Suo Zhenhai. But a few months ago this offering from David Osborne caught my eye. I will let Liu Xue Min's paintings do the talking, and quote David's own commentary about the artist......

Landscape and Tea Time

"This extraordinary bottle was painted in 2006 by Liu Xue Min. But first lets go back to the beginning.

"One of Wang Xisan’s first students was the famous Liu Hui who then taught Liu Fang and his sister Liu Xue Min. Liu Xue Min’s education in inside painting started 25 years ago and she has followed in her uncle and brothers footsteps. This trio of artists are well known throughout the inside painting world.

"I bought this bottle from Liu Hui’s studio when I visited him on one of my visits to Hengshui City. Bottle is larger than normal but for these lovely paintings a larger canvas is, in my opinion, needed. It stands just under four inches high or 9.5 cm."

Some of the detail is mind boggling. Look, for instance, at the table cloth on which the tea items are laid!

Enjoy!

Tom
PS: If anyone can help with translation of the inscription over the landscape, that will be much appreciated.

Hi Tom

Nice bottle!

The first side reads: Gathering in the West Garden.

The inscription on the second reads: Visiting a friend in autumn, dated autumn 2006, painted at Xisan Academy, signed Xue Min.

Regards.

Dear Tom,

This is a very attractive bottle, love the landscape side.

If l have to be picky, then the red leaves on the landscape side can be done better.

Hi Pat,
Let's just say I strayed temporarily beyond my normal turf.   Wink

Hi Steven,
I tend to agree about the leaves. At least you weren't picky about the table cloth!

Dear Tom,

I like the pine leaves. So fine yet painted with a soft touch.

The 'tea time' looks funny.
My presumption is that this is a dealer trying to sell his Chinese antique wares displayed on a fine silk table cloth. The attendant is busy brewing tea to serve to these important clients while they browse.

Cheers,
YT

Thank you all for your comments.

YT,
Perhaps the title should be corrected to: "Closing a Deal in the West Garden"   Wink

Hi YT

I beg to differ.

From the layout, it looks more like a sharing session of ancient vessels.

The title 西园雅集meaning "a graceful gathering in the West Garden". The Chinese character "雅" often suggest graceful and scholar. Anything involving money or business will be scorned upon during such occasions.

Just my observation.

Regards.

Dear Richard,

I agree with your suggestion as I had presume according to the painting and not read into the title.
So is it a gathering where scholars bring their wares for sharing and made poems while enjoying their tea?

Cheers,
YT

Hi YT

Looks like the case here.

Besides, if was a business meeting, the lady should not be present but in this scene, the lady was obviously a member of this gathering.

Regards.

I bow to your expert interpretation of the scene.  Many thanks for explaining it's wider meaning.
