I would like to share a bamboo snuff bottle and get your views as to quality, age, where it was likely made, and etc.

Height about 2.5 inches including the original stopper.

Thank you,

Curt

Dear Curt, George, all,
are we sure that this is bamboo? I don't see the typical pores of bamboo in this bottle and on the one of the other thread.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Giovanni,

I would have to have Curt's bottle in my hand to confirm for sure, but I would say it is a bamboo veneer bottle.  These show up at auction houses every so often.  With a good provenance to indicated some age they can be quite expensive.  Here are some links to other examples,  Charll

Thank you for your comments.  I guess we still cannot atribute an age to this bottle.

Not sure how Sotheby's ascribed Qianlong period to the bamboo veneer bottle.

Dear All,

I am writing from a friend's home in Fullerton CA, and will move to the Fairmont in Santa Monica on 17.Nov.
I don't know about the Sotheby's Bamboo Veneer snuff bottle, but I have  a  palace Workshops Qianlong period Bamboo veneer  ministure vase, probably from an altar set  from the late Robert Kleiner.
   This could be 'right'...

An elegant bottle Curt. Thanks for sharing. I'm afraid I can't help with dating it.

But to answer your above quoted question, I imagine Sotheby's relied heavily on the Edward T. Chow provenance to ascribe it a Qianlong date.   Wink

Joey, when you have a chance, you may want to post a picture of that vase so that we can all take a look and learn.

Thank you all

BTW, the box in which I have stored this bottle has become yellowed or stained.  Does it mean anything?

It sounds as though whatever kind of staining or treatment was applied to the bottle is unstable and still releasing colouration. On older bottles one would expect any staining to have 'fixed' by now.
That doesn't necessary throw the age of your bottle into doubt. It merely indicates that it may have been re-finished sometime within the last few decades.

Dear Curt,

I will definitely do that when I return to Ireland next June, where the piece is located.
Thank you for the suggestion.
Best,
Joey

Dear Curt,

Do take a look at this Imperial Bamboo veneer belonging to a friend. It comes with a strong provenance and quality.

Cheers,
