Dear Joey,

What would you think of this Laque Burgauté Metal?
Should be Japanese, just do not know how to rate it?
It has got nice colour combinations as shown in the third photo.

Cheers,
YT

Wonderful inlays and colors !

I wonder what the gold dots are suppose to represent. Maybe fireflies ?

A beautiful bottle !

Thank you George, no idea about the gold dots but firefly is a very nice imagination Wink

I was asking Joey about this material as he knew about Laque Burgauté on metal from Charll's post. Since getting this bottle, I have been very puzzled.

Cheers,

YT,

Yes, I would think this bottle is Japanese due to the shape, style of design, and use of brown lacquer.  A wonderful bottle!!!!!!   I presume the boarder wave pattern is a silver inset.   If so the gold dots could be water droplets bounce above the waves picking up the golden raise of the sun.  Is the other side of the bottle the same design?

Period?  I would speculate very late Edo to Meiji (1860-1912).

Thank you Pin and Charll.

The wave pattern is pewter inlaid while overall bottle is bronze.
Attached is the other side.

Dear Joey,

Is my title wrong again? Not sure how to call this bottle.

Cheers,
YT

Dear YT,

Charll is better on this type of bottle.
I was referring to Thai bottles in metal, not lac burgaute on metal.
Is there lacquer in this? If so, it should be Lac Burgaute on metal.
If there is no lacquer, it can't be 'Lac Burgaute' ( Since 'Lac' refers to lacquer).
Best,
Joey

YT,

The following comments are just based on what I think I’m seeing in the photos.  If I were cataloging this bottle I would label it “Laque Burgaute on Metal” as Joey indicated. It appears Japanese in origin as previously indicated.  A brown lacquer bottle on a brass body with etched sea-ear, gold and silver color etched metals in a fresh water pond and floral paneled design.
Also, the brown lacquer is etched or carved through to expose the brass body to create the ripple effect on the water.

In regard to other comments, the bottle body material appears to be brass rather than bronze because of the gold tone in the metal.  Bronze typically has a copper or reddish tone to it.  The silver metal I would think is a silver or nickel alloy.  Pewter tends to be pretty soft and would tarnish more readily to a darker blackish hue.

Also, this seems to be a very high quality bottle (and likely very expensive) and I would expect it to have some 'provenance' background.

Hope this helps, Charll

Dear Charll,

Thank you very much. The bottle's price is ok while your description is priceless. Shocked
Provenance is from a Denver collection in the 1950s passed down.(not a really good one I assume.)

Dear Joey,

Good recommendation. Didn't know you are into matchmaking experts too Tongue
Will be glad for you to look live.

Bring this thread back to life, here is another lac burgaute' bottle that I recently acquired.

Japanese Laque Burgauté Snuff Bottle:
A red-brown lacquered and gold gilded flattened flask shaped brass bodied snuff bottle with micro inlays of mother of pearl, haliotis shell, gold, and silver depicting a crane & flowers on one side and on the other a pagoda high on a tree cover rocky bluff above a bridge on a water inlet.  Sides are detailly decorated with gold gild scrollwork floral pattern and shell inlay that are bookend above and below by panels of geometric silver inlays. Polished bone spoon attached a matching cylindrical stopper with a floral gold and shell inset. Height with stopper is 2 1/2" (6.3 cm).

Period:
1880 to 1930.

Condition: In excellent condition with no damage or restoration evident.

Similar Reference: See butterfly-form bottle done in similar decorative style, “Christies Interior, Sale 2585, New York, October 2-3, 2012”, Lot 330.  Also see Zacke, Catalog Number: SN0618-074, A Tsuda Family Lac-Burgauté 'Butterfly' Snuff Bottle.  Metal with lacquer coating and various inlays.
