I can not tell what I am seeing in this one and only auction picture.

Is that bone or ivory that the surface has broken away ?

Dear George,
you know that those highlighted crossed lines indicate ivory, but they are not convincing to me.
There is a basic rule in Chinese art in general: stay away from excessively dirty items, a clear sign of fake.
In this case, just imagine in which conditions should be the central medallion if the surrounding dirty were natural; it would be totally illegible and not almost pristine as it looks.
Kind regards
Giovanni

George,
I may be wrong, but to my eye it looks like some kind of lacquer finish that has chipped off to reveal the basketweave body beneath.
If you look closely at the central medallion, you can detect the weave pattern below the surface.
Most Thai, Burmese and Vietnamese lacquerware is created over a basketweave base. When part of it chips away the underlying weave is exposed.
This photo immediately reminded me of those lacquerwares.

Tom,

When I look closely at the center medallion, all I see is the reflection of the metal surface the bottle is sitting on.

Cheers,

Rube.

Rube,

You are absolutely right!
I was so completely focused on the bottle itself that I didn't even notice the metal surface it was sitting on, until you mentioned it!

But I still think it's lacquer over a basketweave base.
