YT,

Yes, I would think this bottle is Japanese due to the shape, style of design, and use of brown lacquer.  A wonderful bottle!!!!!!   I presume the boarder wave pattern is a silver inset.   If so the gold dots could be water droplets bounce above the waves picking up the golden raise of the sun.  Is the other side of the bottle the same design?

Period?  I would speculate very late Edo to Meiji (1860-1912).
