Steven

While your bottle is also nice I think it is a late 60s/70s bottle probably (based on shape and without handling or seeing the base or mouth).  If I am right, you probably saved yourself a lot of money.  If I am wrong, plenty of other fish in the ocean!

YT

Great bottle.  Maybe Joey could enlighten us who the owner was...

Dear Pat,

Funny you should write that... Cheesy Grin

Yes, I do know the "important NYC collector",  and in fact was sitting next to him and his late wife when they bought the bottle at PB Eighty Four (Parke Bernet Auctions, 1937-1964; then Sotheby Parke Bernet; today Sotheby's NYC)  25 September 1979, but sadly I don't feel free to divulge on the Public Forum. I will send a pm to YT and to you (and anyone else I know who wants to know but I will not put it 'out there').
Best,
Joey

Thank you Steven. I agree with Pat that you are lucky not to have bought that bottle. The carvings are not old.

Dear Pat,
Lucky you asked Joey. An important NY collector sounds like anyone staying there.

Dear Joey,
Waiting patiently. I have quite a number of his bottles.  Roll Eyes

Cheers,

Dear YT,

Wait even more patiently! They had over 2,000 bottles! And I would have happily bought most of them. Superb collection and really nice people (his late wife was his PIC (partner in crime!)).
Best,
Joey

Thanks YT and Pat for your comments regarding to the age of the bottle I was bidding.

I did have some concerns about the bottle, and didn't bid high while it fetched good money,  Altho when  I looked at the carving, I did think it could be old, at least it was carved in old way. It was the pale color of the bottle put me away.  I certainly could be totally wrong.

Here are some additional photos of carving ,base and mouth. Thank you much for your insights.

You all are better at judging age for stone bottles than I, but am inclined to agree that it is carved old style..

Dear Steven,

I am no expert in carvings too, so cannot really emphasize much. A few areas where I am not convinced is the facial carvings of the fisherman, the rocks on which the hawk is resting and the overall balance of the bottle shape between the two-sided dark brown inclusions.

Of course I could be wrong. Grin
Since bottle is not with you then this becomes more of a case study.

Cheers,
YT

Hi Steven,

I was browsing through some posts I missed last month. I agree that the fisherman is carved in the old way. Compare the face of the fisherman to the scholar on this one, which is from the 1800s.
