Dear YT,

Thank you for sharing the interesting bottle. I have seen some reproductions similar to this bottle, but the carving is not as nice as this one.

Should we call it carved glass bottle instead of overlay, I believe the process of making the bottle is different from overlay.

Dear Steven,

Thanks, I like the carvings too especially the four define legs and the bigger mouth opening.
There are subtle Blue overlay on Amber Brown body all around, both sides and front, back.
Overall size is small with a 5.6cm height.
I have heard that this type of overlay colour combination is quite common.

Cheers,
YT

Dear YT,

I agree with Steven - a beautiful bottle, but I'd call it 'Carved Glass' rather than 'Overlay Glass'.
Best,
Joey

Dear all,

I do not think there is anyway to show the blue overlay. There is a big patch of blue in the front and back but the contrast is too minimal with the Amber Brown.

A similar example

Dear YT,

I've not seen the bottle 'live' yet, though I hope to, in Feb. You have.
From the photos it is very hard to tell that it is 'overlay'  (ie., one colour on another and then carved down to the base colour), and not just carved glass.
But if you say it is, I accept that. You know the difference between the two.
Best,
Joey

YT,

For reference another elephant overlay bottle that was at auction in 1982, if you happen to get ahold of the catalogue.

Sothery’s “Catalogue of Fine and Important Chinese Snuff Bottles”, Tuesday April 20th, 1982.

Lot 57- A rare glass overlay snuff bottle of small size, modelled as an elephant, the pink body overlaid in turquoise with the head turned back, the howdah cloth incised with a brocade diaper beneath a ruyi head band encircling the knopped neck.  Ca. 1750-1850.

The photo is in black & white and is not easily reproduced, but Lot 57 is a matching bottle to the Bloch listed in Post #4 and is similar to YT’s bottle.

Dear Charll,

That's great, thank you very much. I was fretting about the description.

No chance on the catalogue though.

Cheers,
