I have really been enjoying snuff bottle related articles within a few of these magazines.

Can anyone recommend some specific Arts of Asia magazines with snuff bottle articles ?

I browse eBay listings but a great many listings do not include descriptions of what the content is within the magazine.

So far I have found three..

November/December 1988
January/Febuary 1982
November/December 1976

Any others that you all might know of.. ?

George,

This is very, very late, but I only read the thread today. I once visited The Arts of Asia offices in HK, and asked for all their back numbers with snuf bottle features. There were five in 2001 - maybe more now. I even met the Vietnamese lady editor, Tuyen Nguyen, who has a sizeable collection of snuff bottles herself, mostly glass.

These are the back issues I got:

1. Arts of Asia September-October 1983. [incl. feature on San Francisco Chinese Snuff Bottle Collectors].

2. Arts of Asia March-April 1988. [incl. features on the Chester Beatty Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles; Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of EricYoung: Part II].

3. Arts of Asia November-December 1993. [incl. feature on the Joe Grimberg Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles].

4. Arts of Asia September-October 1996. [incl. features on Palace Workshops and Imperial Kilns; Dr. Shen's Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles; Li Kechang - Modern Master of Inside Painting].

5. Arts of Asia September-October 2002. [incl. features on Treasured Snuff Bottles of Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Low; The Humphrey K. F. Hui Collection of Snuff Bottles; Inside Painted Snuff Bottles by Gan Xuan; Old & New Glass Snuff Bottles].

Best,
Tom

It seems the May/June 2012 Arts of Asia  has a good article by Robert Kleiner on my collection of Blue & Whites, based on the catalogue ("In Search of a Dragon"). I've not yet seen the article!

Tom, are you interested in Inside Painteds, blue & white Porcelains, or both? I'll happily send you one or both of my serious catalogues as a gift [1998 Worlds in a Bottle (IP & Chinese Paintings); 2007 In Search of a Dragon (B&W)], based on your collecting interests. I've your mailing address in the Journal of the ICSBS (do I address it Tom Lyall?).

Joey,

That's a very generous offer. I have to admit to a peripheral interest in IP bottles, which shows in the fact that less than 3% of my collection are inside painted. It is such a wide and complex branch of the snuff bottle world, involving great knowledge of Chinese classical art in addition to identifying all of the inside painted artists. I have my hands full keeping up with all the other categories.
What kick-started my interest in 1971 was the 'fit-for-purpose' functionality of this art form. The fact that anyone would think to hew a bottle out of a solid lump of stone blew my mind. My primary interest has consequently always been the hardstones, followed by organic materials. I didn't start collecting porcelain bottles until about 15 years ago. Of the porcelains I do enjoy the blue & whites, as they usually have a story to tell.
I am afraid I have no catalogue to reciprocate your kind offer. The best I can do is send you a CD of my humble little collection. As several bottles need re-photographing that will not be ready for another 1-2 months.

Tom
PS: To answer your question, the current ICSBS member list has my correct address.

First of all, Tom, no need to reciprocate, though of course I love looking at snuff bottles, and will be happy to get a cd of your collection, whenever.
Second, I'll send you the B&W book, and my 1987 catalogue and addendum, with about 100 SBs of all types.
Best, Joey

Joey, that is much appreciated. I very much look forward to seeing your book & catalogue!
By the way, it will help get it through the sometimes overzealous Thai customs if you clearly mark the package "Printed Matter" and "USED BOOKS".

Gotcha! Israeli customs are like that too, but I just call them 'shits', not "overzealous"!  Wink
