Dear friends,
it is a long time since my last post, but I constantly read your interesting discussions.
This time I would like to show you a snuff bottle from my collection which represents an elephant (a quite common subject in snuff bottles iconography). I was told that it is made of mother-of-emerald (I hope the name of the material is correct in English), but I am not sure, beacause I am not familiar with this material.
Any suggestions about material and age of the bottle?
Thank you!
Niccolò

Hi Niccolo..

It was probably meant to be called mother of pearl.. But either way, it is not..

Hard for me to tell from the pics for sure.. Maybe carved from Aventurine.

Lets see what others think..

Welcome back !

It looks like an Aquamarine Snuff Bottle to me,  as far as the age, I will vote it middle to late 20th. The stopper could be a little older than that.

I agree with Steven as to age, but thought it could also be  fluorite, although aquamarine is actually a good guess too.
Best,
Joey

All,

My initial thought on this one was fluorite given its translucent appearance and what appears to be banding typical of fluorite, but would have to have it hand with my books to be sure.  Age, I agree with Steven, quite contemporary.

Hi Niccolo and All,

Low grade beryl can look similar to this, emerald being its high grade cousin, in which case "mother-of-emerald" would be a fitting trade moniker for it, although I have never heard the expression before.  But at 8 on Mohs' Hardness scale I hardly think anyone would go to the effort of making and hollowing a snuff bottle from this mineral.

The colour banding on your bottle does look like fluorite, so my guess is that Charll is right. I agree on dating too - 1960s onwards.
