Here is one of my floaters.  Acquired in Suzhou in 1999, when one of my favorite dealers there was still alive.

Dear Tom and Pat,

All these agates are very nice. I am just learning about jade carvings and have not venture very much into agate. Eagerly waiting for Tom's book to be born and learn from it.

I heard that raw agate price has shot through the roof in China. People are abandoning their regular job to harvest them. It may have some small effect on the agates we have on our hand just like jades in the last ten years.

Cheers,
YT

Dear Pat,
Another modern bottle, this time in hardstone, which has me drooling! Although I should not be greedy, and covet another one. Giovanni very generously and kindly, gave me a modern one so I could give out snuff in Synagogue in Israel on Shabbat.
I had once used a new acquisition, a B&W with dragons; and some as-shole (as my late mother would have said.  Wink), complained that it had a dragon on it, and I shouldn't bring idolatrous objects into a Synagogue. The others told him to get a life, but it was off-putting. The gift from Giovanni will come in handy, so. But Tom's examples were beautiful, and now your bottle.
When Tom wrote that he'd bought some in the Mens' Dept. in Ulaan Bataar department stores, I actually thought of flying in for a day or two, and visiting the 3 or 5 stores to buy bottles, when I was in Beijing. But then I didn't actually go to Beijing, and I got one in Europe!
Best,
Joey

Pat,

A wonderful bottle.  If I had not seen the one side with an obvious stone pattern, I would have thought the bottle was a yellow amber from its initial appearance.    Charll

Dear George,

I picture that machine copying a perfect 18th C. Jade, and get shivers.
Shabbat Shalom,
Thanks,
Joey

Dear Joey,
I wonder if the machine ever gets the scale wrong, so you end up with a 600 mm tall copy instead!   Grin

Best,
Tom

I fear that future technology might enable fakers to make anything with a 3-D printer.   Wink
