For those of you that know middle period IPSBs.

This bottle recently sold at auction.  From what I could tell the artist is Gui Xianggu.  The bottle is a little ‘out of my wheel house’ in collecting, but I found myself drawn to it.  Perhaps due to the calligraphy.  I would have been interested in bidding if it could have been obtained the bottle for for less than $1000 US.   But it did subsequently go well beyond my limit to a hammer price of $1700.

Is this indeed a Gui Xianggu bottle?   If it is then is the $1700 a reasonable price.  From doing a little reading this is the only thing I know about Gui.

“Gui Xianggu painted in Beijing between the years 1895-1901, using a color palette that was predominantly brown, gray with shades of orange or russet.  Gui was versatile, other examples by him show that he could replicate different styles, although to varying degrees of success.”

Hi Charll,

I was watching this bottle as well, Its a very nice example of Gui Xianggu bottle, which painted in 1900.

If I know it only fetch that low, I would have bid on it. The calligraphy side is wonderful, I would say its not less than average Ma family's calligraphy. The reasonable price for such a beautiful bottle would be  $5000.00+ if it has a nice provenance.

Thanks Steven for the confirmation.  It's good to know that I'm at least starting to recognize some of these middle period artists.

Pin,

Like Seven, I appreciate the confirmation that it is your feeling that it is an original bottle by Gui.   I guess the final sales price was well within reason or maybe even a little low.

The only artists I seem to recognize quickly are Sun Xingwu, Zhou Leyuan (at least the style), Ma Shaoxuan, and Ye Bengqi only because I have one.  Beyond that I am often in the dark when it comes to middle period artists.
