Molded and decorated with under-glaze colors.  Really vibrant !

Each is holding an article to add to their elegance and also the difficulty of manufacture. As would be typical of such ladies, each has bound feet and it is one of these bound feet which hold the stopper.

Rarely seen in this quality and more rare to find more than one.

I am usually not attracted to these and wouldn't buy any but I DO like these. They are extremely well detailed and executed.  Thanks for posting George!

Dear George,

Very pretty, but totally modern and, probably very soon,  if not already, not rare at all. The additional details are just that, details. No serious added difficulty, if any. The skilled craftsmen in Jingdezhen can churn these out without difficulty if there is a market.

I agree with the first line. But who 'sold you' the 'guff' in the last two lines?  If these were 18th C. originals, fair enough; but they are not.

        Pretty, though.

   Best,
     Joey

George,

Most of the bottles in that book in my opinion are contemporary and/or recent purchase over then collecting period of newly made bottles.  The only value to the reference is that it provides great examples of contemporary bottles.

In regard to the above statement it should read, "Molded and decorated with over-glaze gilded enamels".

This book is not a strong reference to hang your hat on.

Dear George,

I'm sorry, but in 45+ years collecting, and having gone to 31 conventions of the ICSBS, I've never met either of these two gentlemen or even heard of them.
I just read Charll's comment, as well. I would agree, without even having seen the book.
Best,
Joey

Dear George,

I must apologise - I told a lie!  Roll Eyes    Shocked
I just googled Trevor Cornforth, and I've seen him on a number of antiques programmes on UK TV. He's one of a group of 3rd rate antique dealers who 'star' on shows with antique hunting competitions.

He's a pompous ass who says things like, "They would  produce these art treasures  for a bowl of rice a day, out of dedication to the emperor!".  He said this about a very mediocre-looking 1950s/1960s Shandong IPSB, which I would value at US$50-100.

Could someone refresh my memory, please? Which Emperor of China was reigning in the 1950s and 1960s?  Grin

Still have not figured out who Nathan Cheung is. Though I assume he's Chinese.

Best,
  Joey

Dear George,

Are these from the book or you actually bought them?

Cheesy I just want to know before I make a comment.

Curiously,
David

In Oct.2001, I was offered a group of  8 or 9 very ornately and finely enamelled  porcelain snuff bottles with gilded details, in unusual shapes (molded in shapes much more complicated than traditional flask forms), purchased in China during the period May to Oct. that year. They were priced at US$300-400 each, after the owner, an Israeli who guides in China, had added 25% commission.

I was in Hawaii a few months later, and described them to YF. He pulled out a tray of  them, and explained that they were totally modern. Which was obvious.
Best,
 Joey

Dear George,

Grin Now I can be unreservedly honest.

The faces are horrible and it completely misses the point/feel of a traditional chinese lady or high class "courtesan".. and the position they are in is painful and body not proportionate to me.

Lastly, no lady will hold a fan like that.

I think the color is good, but that's about all.

Kindly,
David
