Hi, I just want to introduce myself quickly. I am glad I have found this forum! I would not call myself a snuff bottle collector, I just have a few porcelain ones and as I am interested in Chinese porcelain and art in general, I think this is quite an interesting forum for me and I hope I can learn a lot here!

Hi Mat,

Welcome from me too.

A number of forum members focus their interest on porcelain snuff bottles. If that is your main interest I suggest you browse through some of the older posts, by typing the search word 'porcelain' in the SEARCH window at top right corner of your screen, and take it from there!

Hello Matt,

Welcome, I am relatively new too and learned a lot from this forum (still a lot more to learn). Enjoy reading the old threads, they are eye opening (to me).

Best Regards,

Thank you all again for the warm welcome! Sorry for answering so late but I had not much time in the last days! To me: I am a German living in Greece, and since my childhood I liked antiques, I started buying things when I was 10 years old or so. The last years I have concentrated on Chinese antiques, which I think are a wonderful thing to collect. I have mostly porcelain, and I was always fascinated by snuff bottles too. It is just that here it is not so easy too find good things, most around are fakes I fear.  Smiley

Of course, I will keep reading this forum! Later on today I will post the last of my old purchases that I am uncertain about... Curious to see if that will be also a modern one...

Dear Mat,
welcome here among us. I live in Italy and I too am a passionate collector of Chinese ceramics. If you already do not know it, I strongly suggest you Gotheborg.com which is a forum dedicated to Chinese porcelain.
Kind regards
Giovanni
PS: You are right, today Chinese porcelain is a dangerous field: so many fakes around!!

Hi Mat,

It must be quite difficult finding good Chinese antiques in Greece. I spent my childhood there, and I don't recall seeing any at all!

Ever thought of switching your interest to Minoan antiquities instead?   Wink

Giovanni,
great to know that there are other Chinese Ceramics colletors here! I know about Gotheborg, but I am not yet member there! Wattana, I think it is nevertheless easier to find Chinese antiques than Minoan ones! The trade of items from Greek antiquity is very very restricted over here! I have some classical ceramics, bought in a licensed shop, but I had to wait one year for the ministerial decree (!) that made me have them legally... That is why I stopped buying them. Tongue

Dear Mat,
Here in Israel, we have government licenced antiquities dealers. Everything they have is guaranteed genuine and one is allowed to export it after paying a tax of 10% of worth. But most people just take stuff out and I've almost never heard of a problem. Indeed, whenever I travel, I bring out gifts of antiquities, and have never had a problem.
In Israel, we are very protective of special and rare examples (like a vessel I inherited from my late mom; it is Early Bronze period decorated pottery, made in Canaan ca. 3000-2000 BCE, imitating imported wares. Because it is local and rare, it may not be exported, but is allowed to be owned in Israel.
However a superb Late Bronze period decorated pottery wine jug imported 3000 years ago from Cyprus is no problem, since it is not originally from the Land of Israel.

Best,
 Joey

Lucky you, Joey!  Smiley
here everything (even the smallest shard) that is older than 1452 and related to Greek Culture belongs to the state, and you only can buy the right to have it at your home but you will never be the owner. By the way, could you please have a look at the overlay bottle I posted yesterday? Reading the posts I understand you know a lot about this kind of bottles...
