Dear Julian,
Welcome to the Forum. It is much more active than the ICSBS Website. I've been on a few years already, thanks to introduction by Charll S. from northern California, whom you might have met at the Honolulu convention in 2012, or the Palm Beach convention in 2011, or even the Toronto convention in 2007.

Everyone, Julian is based in Hong Kong at Sotheby's, dealing with Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art and including Snuff Bottles. He's been involved in this field since 2000, if I'm not mistaken.
Best,
  Joey

Dear Inn Bok,

45 years, but who's counting?  Grin   Cheesy

Funnily enough, I always assumed I'd be doing this as a hobby. I don't think I expected the 'Snuff Bottle World' to change so much. I never expected the prices to skyrocket as they have; and I never expected the centre of gravity to shift so far back to China and its periphery, as it has.

You must remember, in the period 1970-1976, my first 6 years as a collector, I knew of no ethnic Chinese collectors. I knew of 2 Chinese dealers, YF Yang in Hong Kong and Eugene Sung in the NYC area.
I also knew there were more Chinese dealers in Hong Kong, Singapore and, presumably, other places.

But there was a Cultural (really, ANTI-Cultural) Revolution going strong in the PRC, and we heard how the Red Guards were smashing Chinese Art treasures, so we who loved Chinese Art thanked G-D that the patrimony of Chinese Culture was safely in the hands of the Kuomintang government in Taiwan, and we pressured our MPs/Congressmen to get Canada and the USA to stand behind the Republic of China in Taiwan, to protect it and the treasures it was safeguarding.

I saw myself and the other Jewish and non-Jewish collectors as doing our part to help protect this great culture. And there seemed more Jewish than non-Jewish collectors. I organised a meeting at my parents' home in Toronto of snuff bottle collectors in 1972, including members of the Hong Kong Society, the then 'American Snuff Bottle Association' and other collectors I'd met in the Toronto area. Of the 12 invited, Victor Topper, Nathan Katz, Benno Hahn, Lillian Citron, Julius Ennis, Eva Cristall, Irving Lindzon and I,  were Jewish (Cool

There were 4 non-Jews: Jimmy Rogers, Diane Anderson,  Edith Jamieson, and Mary Chapman. The only 'no-show' was Lindzon, an arrogant so-and-so, who'd thought he was going to be dealing with my father. When he found out he'd been invited by a 15 yr. old, he made a point of calling back to tell me I shouldn't waste his time.

Mr. Rogers of blessed memory, on the other hand, was a real mentsch (good person). He came to the meeting, thanked me on behalf of the assembled group (all of them 25-50 years older than me!), and later, when Lindzon tried to 'network' with him as two snuff bottle collectors, asked him where he'd been when we'd all gotten together (at my house). Lindzon said he wasn't going to waste his time on a meeting set up by a 15 year old. Mr. Rogers told him he was an arrogant fool, and then called my father, whom he'd met as he was joining my meeting, to discuss business.  Lindzon sold his whole collection to Hugh Moss a few years later. When I'd called him in 1976, to ask if I could see his collection, he told me how Mr. Rogers had told him off in 1972. A few months later, HMM was advertising bottles from Lindzon's collection for sale.

It is wonderful that Chinese Art is now NOT under threat, except by these moronic Islamists (and the PRC should post serious troops near Dunhuang to protect the Buddhist cave paintings from the Islamist terrorists in Sinjiang), and that Chinese collectors are becoming dominant in collecting their own cultural patrimony, because we are all, Chinese and non-Chinese, enriched by the input of those who are organically educated in the subject. Look at all the contributions David has made in just the last few weeks, because of his grounding in traditional Chinese culture in Taiwan. Not to mention all the contributions to our knowledge from you, Steven,

But the way the prices have skyrocketed, has made it very hard for anyone who is not really wealthy, to acquire fine genuine antique snuff bottles. This was easy in the period 1970 to 1990. It was harder, but still do-able in the period 1990-2005. In the last 10 years, snuff bottles of the quality and quantity I collected, have gone up 400-500% and in the case of genuine marked Imperial porcelain SBs, 1000% and more (for example, a bottle I expected to get for US$4,000-5,000 going for US$54,000!  Shocked
Needless to say, I did not buy it.  Roll Eyes  ).

In 2 1/2 weeks, it is Chinese New Year.

GONG XI FA CAI ! / GONG HEY FAT CHOY !

  Best,
    Joey

Dear Joey,

Having started collecting just two years after you, as an undergraduate in 1972, those are exactly my sentiments too. I imagined it was going to be a hobby I could continue to enjoy all my life. In my wildest dreams I never imagined that high prices would one day put top quality bottles beyond my reach.
