Good evening and best wishes to all.

The snuff bottle has a horn spoon and is missing the cork. It is 2.5 inches tall with the stopper. I will photograph the mouth without the stopper and post in due course plus give the height without the stopper.

I will determine SG in due course. The streak would suggest jet.

The following information was provided by the seller who did not know what the sone was :

One one side is the Chinese imortal Lu Dongbin and on the other side a poem which I would love to know its meaning.

The base mark shows the emperor Quanlong from the Qing dynasty. The seller indicated age from 1735 to 1796.

I dont know about authenticity. Looking forward to replies.

Good night Peter

Hi Peter,

If you have not bought it, then it would be good to pass the sale, it remind me the resin bottles I have seen. similar shape, similar finish..

Its definitely not a old bottle as the seller indicate.

Hi Peter,

I agree with Steven. Everything about this bottle suggests it to be a post-1960s product. As with the jet bottle you posted earlier, the overall shape and carving technique are similar to those found on bottles made of wood, lacquer and resin.

This bottle is not jet as the SG is considerably higher than jet (3.0 to 3.5). The streak on unglazed porcelain is chocolate brown and testing a 19C duan stone snuff bottle produced a similar streal. Finally the themo electic readings of this bottle are much higher that those for jet.

For a similar snuff bottle Tom has located this link

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/19250/lot/6161/

Here are links to two other similar bottles

I think the term "apocryphal" Qinalong base mark quoted in one of these references is correct.

Like the other "jet" snuff bottle displayed by me recenly this bottle is is now assumed to be duan stone.

Age will be 20C.

Good night Peter

Peter,

As you are the originator of both these threads, you have the ability to edit the title / name, if you choose to.

Just letting you know.
