Dear Giovanni and all,

Nice Jun Bowl, but not for eBay.  You can sell Ming and later on eBay and with luck you will get good prices.  You can buy some exciting earlier pieces for way under market value.  Why? In my opinion it is because of the lack of buyers who are knowledgeable of pre-Ming Chinese works of art. There are hundreds of eBay buyers with expertise for Qing and later.  There are dozens who can pick a good Ming piece, but only a very few with the experience and funds necessary to buy earlier objects.  Those buyers can be choosy, just take a look at this wonderful Song Ding ware ewer that sold on eBay a few months ago:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/IMPORTANT12C-CHINESE-SONG-DYNASTY-LOTUS-WHITE-DINGYAO-GOLD-RIMMED-WINE-EWER-JUG-/201169262993?pt=Asian_Antiques&hash=item2ed69f5991&nma=true&si=grIsof9HhWuh98w2tQBcP4aBPpQ%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

To the uninitiated $40,100.00 probably seems likee a great result. but in the proper auction it could have brought 10 times as much.

I have found that listing a large group of to sell on one day will usually work much better than listing only a few.

Good luck,

Tom B.

Dear Tom,
WOW!!!!!! What a piece! Really incredible. One would kill for a piece like that.
But you are right, who command the market are Chinese buyers and only a very few of them are interetsed in ancient ware. They prefer Qing usually.
Kind regards
Giovanni

eBay is so strange indeed..  Although, what I have noticed is that for the most part, the nature of the eBay beast will usually bring an item up to close it's value by hammer time.

I almost always start off with an opening bid of 9.00.. Usually it works out..

I am getting ready to list an expensive bottle with little fear that it will bring close to what I am willing to sell it for.

Here is a current bottle that is one of the top five most watched bottles on eBay..  Currently 20 people are watching it, and the bids/bidders are perfectly legitimate..

Hey George,

That is a cast resin SB not carved lacquer.

I have an invisible counter and have often had 50 or more watching.  Some sellers who promote their sales on facebook, twitter and blogs will get 300 or more watchers.  Must be nice.

Best regards,

Hey George,

Yes, I know.. That is what is so surprising and hard to understand.. It is already up to 20.00, which is twenty times what it is worth.. With so many people having it saved to their watch list, will be interesting to see the end results..

I have never personally seen or experienced excessive watchers being attributed to promoting elsewhere online.. I suppose it is possible..

Dear George,
While I agree with Tom B, I feel you are being too harsh; it is worth at least US$5.00!  Grin
So, it is at the moment, 'ONLY'  4 times its real value.  Wink
Shabbat Shalom,
Best,
Joey

Dear David,
Thank you. It is good to be feeling like a normal person and not an invalid.

Ended up that the bidders felt like it was worth at least 80 bucks worth of resin !

Dear George,

Have you never heard the two statements, "There is a fool born every minute", and "A fool and his money are soon parted"?  Grin Smiley
Best,
Joey
