David,

Thanks for bring this Bloch bottle to our attention.  Since it was so squatty in form I did not give it much attention to read the description about having a concentric ring base.

Here is the link for those who are interested: http://www.e-yaji.com/auction/photo.php?photo=2031&exhibition=14&ee_lang=eng&u=248,85

That is interesting... I have never seen a "squatty" bottle with concentric ring base before..

Thank you for sharing it !

Hi Charll,

You're welcome.

I was checking those small blue porcelain ones compared to the ones form the Stone Picking Studio Catalogue 1995 Sotheby's against my mini-vase/possible bottles. And thought the forum might be interested.

George,

This is a swirl base design and not a concentric ring base as indicated.  I've seen a few of these swirl base bottles and in all cases I observed they have been later bottles.  What's later?  Twentieth (20th) century.  The photo is a bit blurry to get a good handle on the quality of the bottle posted.  Sorry I can't add more.

Yes, I did mention being swirl and not concentric..

Big help Charll.. Although the picture is blurry, from what I can see, the quality of paining is poor and would best match a 20th bottle.

Thank you !

All,

Was doing some snuff bottle cataloging this morning on a new acquisition from the recent Christie's snuff bottle auction, "The Ruth and Carl Barron Collection of Fine Chinese Snuff Bottles: Part V, 13 September 2017, New York."  I did manage to pick up one bottle, so I thought I would share it as I was doing the documentation work.

SOFT PASTE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN PILLAR SNUFF BOTTLE WITH CONCENTRIC RING BASE:
The bottle is decorated beneath the lightly crackled glaze with two warriors from the novel Water Margin, Mu Chun and Zou Yuan, each identified by an inscription. The base unglazed with 13 concentric rings that is slightly dimpled in to the center of the base.
3 ¼ in. (8.3 cm.) high, quartz stopper.

Period:  Jingdezhen Kilns, 1820-1880

Provenance:   Elisabeth and Ladislas Kardos, Vancouver, Canada.
                       Robert Hall, London, 1995.
Ruth and Carl Barron Collection, Belmont, Massachusetts, no. 1932.

Exhibited: Boston, International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society Convention, The Barron Collection, 23-26 September 2008.

The bottle is on its way (i.e., being shipped) and the pictures are courtesy of Christie's.

Dear Charll,

Congratulations! Another beauty, and, as Steven pointed out, a great provenance.

By the way, you might have met Charles Kux-Kardos of Vancouver at the last few conventions; certainly at Portland, which he attended with his wife Heidy and their daughter Scarlet. He is a nephew of Ladislas Kardos.

Ladislas and Elizabeth Kardos were good friends and very kind people, who were very patient with me ['nuff said!  Roll Eyes Grin].

     Best,
Joey

Dear Charll,
congratulations. For some strange reason or coincidence, I have never found a bottle of this type, I mean a pillar bottle with concentric rings on the base.
Kind regards
Giovanni

I am thrilled you got this bottle Charll!  I am sure Heidi and Charles will also be delighted.   We had a nice dinner with them and their charming daughter Scarlet in LA.  Again so happy you got this wonderful bottle.  All the best!  Jo and David

I thought you might enjoy seeing this small blue and white bottle with concentric rings!  It is porcelain, flower design unusually small size 1.5" or 38.1 mm.  It has concentric rings on the base and ming style classic scroll of lotus flowers enclosed by a leafy stem.  I believe it to be Imperial.  Any comments or additional ideas on the dating are welcome.

All, this bottle is a recent acquisition from the Oakridge Auction Gallery sale of snuff bottles on March 19th. 2023.  It is a non-dragon concentric ring base soft paste bottle.

Blue and White Soft Paste Porcelain Snuff Bottle with Concentric Ring Base:
Soft paste bottle of cylindrical-cracker form with an unglazed concentric ring base.  Qing white glaze blue & white figure motif with Gu (yellowish) crackles (or ice crackles).  Motif depicts the story of ‘Sima Guang’ with sixteen children at play.  Sima Guang, as a child, saved a playmate who had fallen into an enormous vat full of water.  While the other children scattered in panic, Sima Guang saved the stuck child by smashing a hole in the base of the pot to allow the water to flow out.  His quick thinking and actions managed to save the boy from the disaster.  Sima Guang later became the chief minister in the Song court.

The bottle came with a variegated green serpentine flattened cabochon set in a silver bezel with a braided lip and a silver spoon (oversized for bottle).

Height is 9.0 cm without the stopper and 2.8 cm in diameter.

Period: ca. 1780-1850

Condition: One chip to foot and a restored neck repair.

Provenance: Oakridge Auction Gallery, Chinese Snuff Bottles, 19 Mar 2023, Lot 0665, from a Private Collection, Maryland.

Charll,

A very attractive bottle, and, as George says, with an interesting motif.

That's a fine old stopper too, which I'm sure will look really great on the right bottle.

Great bottle! High quality decoration, and as Tom said, great stopper too that should be matched with another bottle.

Nice find, congratulations dear Charll.
