Hi Giovanni

Nice Copy.

However, from what I know, this vessel is used by the Buddhist monk to anoint the worshipper as blessing and purification.

In Chinese, it is known as the Jing Ping (淨瓶) which can be literally means "Pure Vessel". This vessel is sometime depicted in the portrait of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. Such paintings/statues are known as Jing Ping Guanyin (淨瓶观音).

For your reference.

Regards.

Very funny dear Joey, and certainly in some sense reflecting the reality; I have to remember that. But I don't have your exceptional memory.
Kind regards

Hi David

Just to add, in Chinese the word (香) fragrance and incense share the same character.

For your information.

Regards.

Dear Richard,
Is that in reference to the inscription on my Ma Shaoxian bottle? That a 'fragrant bath' could be translated as an 'incense bath'?
Joey

Hi Joey

Yes, I am referring to your Ma Shaoxian's bottle. The inscription reads Xin Yu Jing Xie (薰浴敬写) meaning writing after a fragrance bath.

In this case, it cannot be translated as an incense bath. It is the normal bath with water to purify oneself.

Besides, incense are usually burn to bring out its fragrance. Although in this instance, incense may be used as part of the fragrance process, but may also not be the case.

For your reference.

Regards.

Hello,

Please note if you see the following notes on my posting. It means that those were purchased prior to joining this forum and starting to learn about this area. I will take one person's advice and only post those that I think are tourist/student bottle.

Please note: These were purchased prior to my joining this forum. All were bought prior to me taking a more serious view of learning about this area. So, please give constructive comments regarding, why this is a tourist/student bottle (if it is), and within this category, is it a good piece or not.

Regards,
David

Thank you  Grin, I would love to see the face of a very serious elder top snuff bottle collector seeing that disclaimer for the first time! And then his face again after understanding and noticing the work I put into coming up with the fun description of the tourist overlay bottle.

Shabbat Shalom,

Dear David,
You could have a very successful job writing very impressive total drivel to sell crap to silly people with too much money, not enough sense, and a great social need to look like 'serious collectors'.

We collectors tend to take ourselves too seriously.

My cure for that is to study the work of Shibata Zeshin, one of the great Japanese artists. He lived from 1807  to 1891, and a superb collection of his works, amassed by an American couple, James and the late Mary Louise O'Brien, is at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

The work that helps me laugh at myself,  "Monkey Posing as Collector") is illustrated in " The Art of Shibata Zeshin" , and shows a monkey in a printed yukata, looking carefully through spectacles at a netsuke of a monkey, from which dangles a lacquered inro and a simple ojime. Near him is a folded fan, next to a book with an ornate cover.
See below:

Best,
  Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

HAHAHA! LOL! That is so very appropriate to some people that I knew in the past.

If I had known of this drawing back then, I will put one up in my house.  Grin

Right now, I split off some time to study Qing history from wiki. There is an amazing amount of info. out there. I usually have an issue with not buying a physical book or back copy, but for this massive topic, the wiki gives me a good free overview.

Sibata Zeshin will have to wait in line, after Carlo Cipolla...  Cheesy

Thank you for being so great,
David

Hi Joey,

Thinking of what you said, that is actually a good idea! Maybe after I study hard enough, I can help people research their collection and then charge them a couple of bottles!  Grin

For my "fun drivel" in the style of a certain dealer. Lol!

But, seriously, I think it might lower their value if they let me write.  Tongue
