I was quite taken with this little bottle. It is only the width and hight of my thumb, but I think, beautifuly cut and painted. Measurements are app.56mm high by 18mm at its widest. Although small, I get a real sense of space and depth in the painting. It is continues and depicts a horse and rider in a mountainous landscape on one side, and a fisherman in a boat on the other. I have no knowledge of age and the signature is hard to read even if I could.....maybe someone can help with that?
Cheers, Brenda

Hi Brenda,

I can't tell you anything about the signature - it's barely readable. But I love the painting. The style of brushwork is unmistakably that of Suo Zhenhai, one of my favourite IP artists. It is most likely painted by one of his students, if not by the master himself.

Thanks Tom....yes the landscape really appealed to me for some reason. I'm sorry about the script....it is so faint and so tiny, and my camera is just an average one. Here is a pic of it in hand to show how narrow it is.  Smiley

Hi Brenda,

For comparison, here is a bottle by Suo Zhenhai, showing a figure with donkey crossing a bridge.

Hi Brenda,

Beautiful bottle, altho I am not so into the bottle shape.Smiley

It really could be a Suo Zhenhai bottle, the camera didn't do the best, I kinda not sure if the signature is "Yi shi"(suo's art name) or not, It well could be.

If its a Suo Zhenhai bottle, it could be valuable, but also depends on the painting quality even with his signature. Suo was very productive during his painting career, and  his painting quality varied as well. In this case, it won't be very valuable , I will say $150-$250 will be a reasonable range.

Just my 2 cents.

It will help for us to judge your bottle better if you can take a couple of better pics.

Steven

There is no denying that the painting is done quite nicely, and I do see the similarities to Suo Zhenhai, but the bottle bothers me.. Actually it bothers me quite a bit..

Reminds me of other similar cheap bottles like this one below that I see so many of on places like eBay..

I wonder if Suo Zhenhai or other popular modern artists would use a bottle like this. I have just never seen someone like Suo Zhenhai use one like it before. Perhaps like Tom said, it is painted by one of his students..

Regardless, the painting is very nice !

There are some example of finely crafted square rock crystal bottles from 1850 on to turn of century after which these were modeled, however larger.  I have one of them that was painted by Xue Shao Fu with a 1907 date but the painting nearly destroyed, so I cleaned it out completely.  As it gets photographed, I will share it.

Good point Pat.

I was wondering that myself - whether Brenda's bottle is not perhaps an old quartz one that SZH painted inside. But it is more likely to be by one of his students.

Brenda, is the bottle noticeably cold to the touch when you pick it up (after not handling it for a while)?

Whoever painted it did a nice job....I really like the sense of depth in the painting. Looking at the Suo Zhenhai bottle I can quite see why Tom likes his work. This artist could also become a favourite of mine too. Smiley Although there are no bubbles, its not quartz Tom, but very well cut.

In that case it was possibly hewn and hollowed from a solid slab of glass, in the same way that a natural stone or quartz bottle would be (i.e. not blown).

Hi Steven,

Here is a Suo Zhenhai signature for comparison. To my untrained eye I see several similarities.
