Dear Tom,

No idea but it is just for viewing pleasure. I just like the carving work on such a small body.

Dear George,

Sorry for putting up a non-snuff bottle here.

Cheers,

Hi YT,

What is the bottle for? Why could it NOT be used to hold snuff? Is the top not a tight fit?

Dear Tom,

It used to be tight fitted (a small dent at the gold fitting has caused the bottle to be loose) and rumoured to hold gun powder in the early 19th century Huh

Someone did tell me that it could be a snuff bottle too.

Cheers,
YT

Hi YT,

I have two Thai bottles, one made of wood, the other a hollowed out seed pod with a wood stopper. I was told that both were originally for gunpowder. But they could just as easily be used for any powder, including snuff.

Of course, if you are going to use a bottle for snuff after it's had gunpowder in it, you better clean it out really well, or your snuff may give you a more explosive experience than you were planning!  Grin

Dear Tom,

I will take note of that if I am able to get my hand on some snuff Tongue

it can be quite tricky in the country I am residing LOL.

Dear YT,
Very beautiful object. I think most of us who collect snuff bottles, appreciate other small, well made little objects.
Many SB collectors also collect Japanese netsuke (as I do, myself, though I only have a handful), and have an affinity for small objects.
Thank you for posting it. I thought at first that it was opal, but reckon if it was, the mineral experts would have said so.
Best,
 Joey

Hi YT

Thanks for posting this owl bottle.

Besides collecting snuff bottles, I also have a small collection of owls.

Regards.

Dear Brenda,
I happen to know that this little treasure is in Labradorite, but the colours are indeed like Paua shell from NZ (and I presume, Australia).
I love South Pacific Paua shell, with its greens and blues, and also the South China type, with its reds and roses (you can see it in Thai Lacque Burgaute), while the Atlantic version, regular mother of pearl, is not as pleasing to my eye.
When I was in New Zealand in late 2005/early 2006, I bought a bunch of pieces, and gave them to a Judaica artist in Israel, to incorporate into a Kiddush cup in Silver. Gorgeous.
 Best,
 Joey
