I've finished work on the 2013 HK Bird Report for the time being, so I took time off with my wife to visit Shenzhen yesterday to try to find the bottle shop we frequented in the late 1990's.

Unfortunately that was gone, now a bag shop, but I was surprised to find another small shop with some quality bottles hidden away on the top floor. Also surprised that the prices were quite reasonable (after discount). I chose this bottle because it had such an atmospheric feel to the painting, you could feel the mist and snow

The lady running the shop said her husband was a painter and dealer in IPBs based in Hengshui. I eventually paid RMB1500 for this bottle, probably twice what I would have paid 15 years ago so not too bad. I could have got it cheaper but I wanted to establish a good relationship (and I wanted the bottle). Especially as she was happy to accept commissions - I've been hoping for this sort of contact.

This bottle looks very similar in style to one on page 68 of Jill Guo's 2013 Catalogue, so similar I can't believe it wasn't painted by that artist Hou Changyun or one of his students.
The date is 2014, my wife says the artists name on the bottle is Liu Jie, grateful for confirmation and any other thoughts from experts.
Also I think I have seen this design before somewhere, but can't remember where. Does anyone know?

Congratulations Geoff!

An attractively painted bottle. I love the shakey bicycle tracks out of (or into?) the doorway!
I'm not a collector of IP bottles, so can't help you with answers to your questions, I'm afraid.

BTW, I have a landscape bottle painted by Zhi Jie ( 志杰 ). I wonder if Liu Jie is related; or is Liu the family name?

Beautiful bottle and congratulations !

I do not have Jill's catalogue for that year.. The only thing I know about Hou Changyun, is that he is a Ji school artist.

I am sure someone will be able to help you better..

Again, beautiful and thank you for sharing !

Hi  Geoff

Need  to  talk /  meet

1.  If    this  is  really  THE  Hou  Changyun  then he's  an  up-coming  new  budding  artist   of the  first  degree

I  have  actually  commissioned a   bottle  by  him  at  RMB4 K

2.   I need  to  visit  this  shop  with  you

  Next  week are  you  free?

3.  I  just  heard  from  Jill that  she  went  to  Hengshui  to  buy  bottles  for  her  Autumn  2014   catalog,  which I assume   will be  issued  just before   the   2014  ICSBS  Convention  in  HK  +   Xi'An

This  should  be  a  very  good  one ! I just  hope  that there  are  not  TOO many mouth-watering  bottles  otherwise  I  will  have  to  go  to the  bank  for a  loan....

Cheers

Peter

PS:   Apologies   to  all  for  being  off-line  for   several  weeks.  I  was     first  on  holiday  and  then  next  working  full-time    on my  Xian  ICSBS presentation

Hi Peter

I'm not saying it is by Hou Changyun - just the style of painting is very similar to that of his bottle on page 68 of the 2013 catalogue. But the calligraphy is different, as you can see.

Most likely it is a good copy - I mentioned I had seen this design before somewhere but can't remember where.

Thanks for your comments Tom and George

Hi Geoff

Hou  Changyun  is  still  at  ( senior)  student   level so  he  can't possibly  have  his  own  students

Are  you  free  next week  ?   I  need to     run through  my Xian presentation   with a   "wise"  guy   and  I  have  SO much  to  discuss

Liu  Yizi !!!

BingBing      goes   to  Mongolia  next week    with our   son  on holiday   before  we   re-group  as  family   in Wenzhou    around  18 Aug,  so  next week  I'm  foot  loose  and    I  - P - B  free

We also  need  a  re-visit to  CAC - Wanchai  and   track  down the  original   Hollywood  Road  dealers   who vanished

Cheers
Peter
