Hi Brenda,

It looks like Wang Bingrong to me.
If so, he was a highly accomplished porcelain carver, whose bottles (and signature!) are widely faked today.

See this link:

Hi Brenda

Tom is right.

The mark is the name Wang Bingrong. However, the calligraphy style is not his usual style. Can you show us the bottle itself as well?

Regards.

I have had a few genuine Wang Bingrong bottles. One which is illustrated in my 1987 catalogue is #64.
The calligraphy ALWAYS (in my experience  Wink) goes right to left; not up to down, as in this example.

Dear Joey,

Isn't that because he usually signs his work in seal script, not this type of calligraphy?

Hi All

I have a feeling that this may not be an original Wang Bingrong but we cannot tell until we see the bottle, at least.

I also have a few of his pieces and as Joey pointed out, the signature is always horizontal from right to left, not vertical as in this example.

Regards.

Dear Tom,
It has been my experience, and I saw from Richard's 2nd posting in this thread, his as well, that Wang Bingrong always signed horizontally (Thanks, Richard. I'd forgotten the term while writing before. Roll Eyes ), not vertically.
Best,
 Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Hey guys I was'nt expecting it to be anything of any importance  Huh.....just curious about the script is all. It is on a porcelain bottle which I am very fond of because of the celadon glaze and the little chicks.....as you no doubt have realised by now, I have a fondness for animals. Grin

Dear Brenda,
Cute bottle.  No way is it by Wang Bingrong. I like it though, I wish it didn't have an obviously fake signature.
Best,

Joey

Have a look at this one on Trocadero......white bottle same signature.....must have been a busy boy at one time......you would think they would check the signature first before copying it.....sheesh! Grin.......look at the price!

Hi Brenda

I agreed with Joey that this is definitely not by Wang Bingrong.

The other bottle in the link from Trocadero is also a modern (expensive) copy.

Regards.

Hi All

This is one of the Wang Bingrong's bottle in my collection. It has been posted before under a different thread. I am posting it here again for easy reference:

A carved porcelain bottle by Wang Bingrong of flattened pear shape carved with a continuous landscape scene in a mottled green and white glaze. The base incised with four characters 'Wang Bingrong Zuo', made by Wang Bingrong (王炳荣作).

This bottle is unusual as it still has the original matching stopper. Height without stopper: 78 mm.

Provenance: Raymond Li, a Hong Kong collector who has also written a few books on snuff bottles.

Published: The Art of Imitation In Chinese Snuff Bottles by Raymond Li, bottle number 23 on page 19, 1985.

Enjoy!

Richard

Dear Richard,
That indeed looks very impressive, and an original stopper is really rare. Congratulations, again (I'm sure I wrote something similar on first viewing it when you originally posted it).  Wink
And Raymond Li was an iconic snuff bottle dealer in Hong Kong.
I have 5 books by Mr. Li:
A Glossary Of Chinese Snuff Bottle Rebus, 1976
The Medicine-Snuff Bottle Connection, 1979
Snuff Bottle Terminology -  Chinese and English Equivalents, Part I, Glass * Agate * Quartz, 1981 [signed]
Chinese Snuff Bottle Themes - Popular Stories And Fables, 1983      [signed w/dedication]
The Art Of Imitation In Chinese Snuff Bottles, 1985                       [signed w/dedication]

Was there a Part II or even a Part III to Snuff Bottle Terminology?
Best,
 Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Hi Joey

Thanks for your comments again.

Indeed you have praised this bottle before when I first posted it a while ago.

I acquired it from Mr Paul Li, the son of Raymond while in Hong Kong in the 90's.

Regarding Part II or Part III of the book, Snuff Bottle Terminology, there is none. As Raymond has already passed on, I doubt there will be another title unless Paul would want to continue the tradition.

Regards.

Dear Richard,
I enjoy seeing this bottle every time you post it.
My query was whether the late Raymond Li had published a second or even third part to his "Snuff Bottle Terminology Part I". Thanks to your answer, I now know he did not.
Did he publish any other books besides the 5 I listed?
Best,
 Joey

Thanks again, Joey!

As far as I know, he has only published those 5 titles (I also have these same titles).

Regards.
