Thanks for sharing Mike,

I agree with Tom, the modern enameled bottles will be very collectible in the future if it keep the high standard like what Mike shared with us. My favorite is the one done by Ye Ai Ping, it still keeps the traditional style, but with more detail and better painting skill.

I was watching a modern bottle signed QianlongNianzhi Mark, can you guys want to guess how much did it fetch? it surprised me anyway.

Steven

Steven,

A funny thing about these modern bottle is that the price can very quite widely.  On Ebay this bottle would be around $235 more or less, but I've seen these go for as much a $1200 at the secondary auction houses.  Have not figured out the distinction as to why this is happening.

Hi Steven,

Several modern bottles like this were in a HK auction (Treasure Auction House?) about 8 years ago. I was surprised at their estimates at that time (2006), which were at least 4-5 times HIGHER than what I was paying for them in shops in Bangkok.

The one in your picture should not sell for more than US$200.

Hi Steven,

That's crazy !!!!
It's a very nicely painted bottle, but modern for sure.
Some people have deep pockets....

Tom

PS: these three were all bought in Bangkok for well under $200 each.

Hi Tom,

When I said the bottle is a little bit special, because the bottle is attributed to Wang Xisan, but I personally didn't see the bottle's painting is better than other modern bottles.

Sorry to say but the master type painting doesn't and will not show through on these. Just my personal view.

Dear Pat,
    I agree with you 100%.

Dear Steven,
Personally, I don't believe this is by Wang Xisan. I have a bottle attributed to Wang Xisan, which I bought in 1982 in NYC at the ICSBS convention (Tom, oddly enough, the price was US$200!). But it was not then attributed to  Master Wang. I was told that it was  ca. 1850-1940. YF Yang, when he saw it many years later, suggested it was Master Wang's work
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

OK, I now too understand Steven's special reference comment.  I have seen a number of Wang Xisan enamel bottles illustrated in auction catalogs and in various references of documented collections.  I have would hard time believing that this is one of his works.   In my opinion someone did not understand what they were purchasing.  As Pat reaffirmed, the quality of this bottle is not top notch work.

Dear Charll,

I actually had doubt on the bottle, also think its not the best example of enamel on glass.

-Tom,

This bottle is actually from John Hamilton collection, not sure if any one know the collector, and there is 2 letters attached to the sale, please find it on attachment.

Dear Steven,
I know John Hamilton and his wife, from Texas. Not collectors I would 'hang out' with, if you get my drift. I don't know if the letters are genuine, but even if they are, the bottle is NOT by Wang Xisan. Possibly it is by his students, and he is acknowledging it as coming from his atelier. Or the letter is from another bottle which was genuine, and it is being 'transferred' to this bottle.
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Joey,

I am with you, doubting the bottle is by Wang, the mark is really very done compared with other Marks done by Wang . But the painting is certainly not the quality I would expect from Master Wang.

Also the letter from Wang xisan was not attached to the sale, that looks kinda suspicious to me.

Dear All,

I agree that the quality one normally associates with Wang Xisan's work does not appear to be there. The few enamel on glass bottles I have seen which are attributed to him are superior to this bottle.

I read somewhere that he only painted enamels on glass for around 2 years, under the tutelage of the Ye family, before turning his talents to IP bottles, and has not returned to enameling since.
