Greetings to all.

Have posted on a sugilite snuff bottle from the Wessels manganese mine in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. I also got this high grade sugilite carving at the same time. It weighs 553 grams and is 4 1/2 inches high with an additional 3/4 inch wodden base. The refractive index RI of a section was measured at 1.61. The carving would date to 1980 or later.

Best wushes to all Peter

Dear PeterH,
The quality of the carving on this 'mountain' rivals bottles I've dated to ca.1850-1880, based on the quality of the carving. True, that was on objects usually a quarter the size of your example, but if they could do it this well
on this piece, they should be able, with more care, to reproduce the same quality on a snuff bottle.
That is scary, for people trying to buy only antiques.
Thank you again, for posting it.
