Thanks in advance.

Hello Mica,

How tall is this bottle?
The material looks like a type of jade - it may be 'mawsitsit', from Burma. See sample below...

Dear Micaela,
It looks like it could also possibly be Chloromelanite, yet another mineral also considered 'jade'.
The bottle looks to be a melon shaped snuff bottle, with more melons and vines in high and low relief. The symbolism is to wish the recipient of the bottle (the one who received it as a gift), many children (because of the seeds of the melon) and long length of life (because of the long vines).
Dating could be 1880-2010. When did you purchase it?
Best,
 Joey

Dear Joey,

Here is a sample photo of Chloromelanite. You may well be right.
Personally, I cannot tell the difference between Mawsitsit and Chloromelanite. And since they are both members of the jadeite family, I imagine they are chemically very close.

Dear Tom,
The reason I always suggest Chloromelanite, is because I can not get over feeling that 'Mawsitsit' is not really the name of a mineral; someone is trying to put one over on me.  Grin
I know it really is one, but I can't get over that feeling. And since I learned of Chloromelanite, I love using it as a reference.  It sounds so 'educated' to use it. Silly, ya?  Cheesy
Joey
