George,
    He was not any sort of collector of snuff bottles! An English missionary or missionary doctor collected the snuff bottles in China, over 20 or 30 years; then this guy bought the whole collection at a bargain price even for then, and added it to the Burghley House collections (Almost every owner of the estate has added a collection of antiques or art to the estate collections, since the 18th C. Thus, they have a whole sh--load of stuff there!  Wink).
