George,

I don't know of any books, but I have come across a couple of websites where you can search for Chinese classical poems by inserting the poet's name followed by key words.

Finding what you are looking for can be a little hit and miss. But when you do, it does give you the poem stanza by stanza in English and Chinese script, side by side.

Thing is, those websites let me search, if I know what I am searching for ...

What I am sort of limited towards doing is placing the bottles poem/script in front of me, pick a couple of characters out of the script, and then thumb through the book and simply look for those same characters within the poem that are in the same spot as are in the books poems..

I can actually thumb through my current 450 pages of poems rather quickly ...

So am really just hoping to expand on that same technique..  More books on poems that shows the script, and then also translates that to English.

I agree, having the book does sound more practical. Certainly when the poem is reproduced on the bottle in full, or starting from the beginning.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time an artist will take only the best-known passage from a poem, as we often do in English when quoting a favourite poet. The reader is expected to recognize which poem the verses are taken from. And, of course they do, as Richard, Inn Bok and Steven often demonstrate!

Here is one titled , Chinese Poems In English Rhyme, by Admiral Ts'ai T'ing Kan, copyright 1952..

It shows 122 T'ang Period poems in both Chinese and English translated.

Some of which are also in another book previously mentioned called, Poems of the Masters..

Interesting the difference in translations for some words between this author, and the author for the Poems of the Masters...

Another good looking reference book for translating poems ..

Found on eBay... A Brotherhood In Song, Chinese Poetry and Poetics, Published 1985 by
The Chinese University of Hong Kong..

385 pages, and am guessing at least a couple hundred poems

An impressive looking book George.

I would be particularly interested in reading the section 'The Art of Poetry Translation'.  From the huge diversity of English renditions of the SAME poem, I'm guessing it is no easy task to provide both literal translation AND verse that 'flows' well.  It really is an art in itself, for which considerable talent is needed.

I was thinking about just making a little ebook with these pages for you.. A couple of months ago I remember finding and signing up for a free online ebook creator.  Now I can not find it, and can not remember the name..

I don't suppose you, or maybe someone else here knows of a free ebook creating software online someplace ?

Thanks George,

I have never used the software to create an e-book myself. If memory serves me well (which it doesn't always!) there is one called ISSUU, which Robert Hall used to make the e-book version of his catalogues. I'm not sure if it's free. Perhaps it has a free trial period instead.

I'm planning to create an e-book myself soon, so will be interested to know how this pans out!

That is the one Tom.. Thank you !

We can change the jpg images to PDF easy enough and for free via http://www.convert-jpg-to-pdf.net/result.php?margin_size=2&page_size=1&image_size=1&page_orientation=1

The next step would be to create PDF using Acrobat.com as ISSUU requires.. That is where I am at a standstill... Although only 7.50 a month, they want the year in advance at 90.00 for annual fee.

Once we create the PDF using https://new.acrobat.com/en_us/products/pdf-pack/benefits.html?trackingid=ICNBP&s_tnt=67837:1:0 then can upload to http://issuu.com/home to create an ebook.

George,

I have always written up a page for each snuff bottle as I acquired them, together with photos, created as 'word' files. (That way I avoid the daunting task of tackling a whole collection!) Then I convert into pdf for storing on CDs. There are many free programs for converting 'word' docs into pdf. So not necessary to use Acrobat (which is NOT free). I myself use Nitro and Primo.

Not sure, but I believe ISSUU will load up the individual pdf 'pages' as pairs, to create the two-page spread you see as a viewer.
