Well, an interesting turn of events (I think)....

While photographing my agate snuff bottle, I discovered it had air bubbles....must be glass.  So, I found you already have a post about imitation silhouette agate, so I added my photos there.  Here's the link:

The bottle measures 2.5" tall x 1.75" wide x .75" deep.

Thanks Tim, that is bigger than I thought, and about average for a stone bottle.

Hi All

Not   sure  who  started  this   thread,  but  Agate  bottles  are    IMHO   a very  much over -rated    thing

I  can't  even  begin  to  understand  how    an  artist can  paint  well  inside   such an  opaque   medium

And  it's  almost  impossible to   see  clearly  the  paintings  inside   agate  bottles

Thus  - for me  at least -  agate bottles   are   a  No No !

Cheers

Dear Peter,
You are not letting your artistic muse free.
Imagine a landscape in the mist, the mist contributed by the translucence of the pale grey-brown agate. I bought such an example from Erick Schiess in NYC at the last ICSBS convention. I don't know the artist, but I love the bottle.
Similarly, it contributes to the murky effect of fish swimming under water in a pond.
Well, to each his own; I see your point about it not being as easy to admire the painting, but I still love my new one, bought in NYC, and my inside painted chalcedony by Wang Xisan...
Best,
  Happy Holidays,
Joey

I have to agree with Joey. The agate 'canvas' challenges an artist's creative abilities in a way which would not be there on a perfectly prepared plain lead crystal blank.

Hi  All

Each  to  his  own  taste....

But  I can  vouch  for the  fact  that  agate  bottles     are   a  very  refined  taste :  often    very  expensive  to  buy  (because  of the   agate  value  itself)   but   equally  very  hard  to  sell ( because  of the  very  limited    audience)

 Wink

Cheers

Peter

Tom, You and I are 'scholarly' in our tastes...  Grin
