Dear Ulrich,
Yiddish has a number of  dialects, Galician (southern Polish) and Lithuanian being two of them.
Since it is usually written in Hebrew letters, toches or tuches is equally correct for the    transliteration, but I assume you are joking when you said it meant something like a face. It is from the Hebrew 'tachat', which means  'underneath' as an adverb, or 'bottom' or 'posterior' as a noun. "He fell on his tuches" or "He fell on his ass" is the same...
Mir shpreches a bissele Yiddish; mir nisht spreches a grosse Yiddish...

Dear Joey

I have written a long reply on your posting. Yes, it was a joke. I could have made one on "tucheles and tacheles" but I did't want to upset you.
One false type and my message went into the nirwana.
I would like to talk to you about Judaism which is a topic that interests me very much. But now my sleeping pills begin to work and I can't repeat the whole message out of memory. Since it is an other theme than snuff bottles we might corresond by regular email.

Are you an orientalist since you studied Chinese? I am a retired neurologist with a very broad spectrum of interest and activities. Please write to me in Yiddish, I like that idiom very much since I am quite polyglott also and in my little country there is a ton of upper German dialects from the mediavel period which the boches won't understand.

All the best

Ulrich

This flaschele by Ma Shaoxuan has been in possession of Mr. Kaynes-Klitz. Do you recognize it?

Dear Ulrich,
I will contact you with my email privately, re.Yiddishkeit. I am afraid my knowledge of der Mama Loschen is quite small. I learned in a Yiddish school for nursery and a year of kindergarten, then went to Hebrew language schools after that.  Sadly, my 'best' Yiddish is imitating a thick Yiddish accent when it is called for in a joke.
I am afraid I don't know what 'tucheles and tacheles' mean.  Huh
But it takes a lot, usually, to upset me. Especially when it is not meant maliciously.
Re.study: I started collecting Chinese snuff bottles just before my Bar Mitzva, which was in Feb.1970, a few weeks before my 13th birthday according to the solar calendar. I studied two years of college Mandarin Chinese at Hebrew U. In Jerusalem.
Best,
Joey

Hi Ulrich,

I missed the Snuff Bottle convention held in Singapore. I think I was out of town then.

Hello Sunny Day,

Welcome to the forum. We are all from different corners of the world, as you will see, but we love to chat about snuff bottles, so that brings us together. I am originally from London, but now live in Thailand.

A belated welcome from me as well. Sunny Day.
I just returned to my Irish summer home, after visiting friends in Malta, Gozo, and London.

Dear Ulrich,
There are "smaller mountains" in Switzerland? Where do you hide them? All the ones I have ever seen, were BIG...  Grin

Dear Ulrich,
we seem to be almost neighbors: I am from Basel - and collecting snuff bottles since 1969 Smiley
I missed, I think, the instructions to download your publication. How can I get it?
Mit nachbarlichen Grüssen
