hi all  I have a problem there is a very small bottle inside this jar we can see it with a torch what does it say on the bottom and should we break it open  to see what it is
we can see it if you shine a torch but it must have been made in there or put in there at manufacture  should I break it   or was it meant to be there we think its a snuff bottle it very small  so before I break it what does it say  and  does it say anything about whats in it

I can not help with the value of the vase for telling if you could consider breaking it for a better treasure inside..

Interesting situation, and hope you will share your decision, the outcome, and bottle within with us !

Hopefully someone else will be able to help with info for your vase so you can decide what to do..

Hi Shane,

Thank you for the updates, I assume the wine bottle is a Japanese one, so is the Opal angel.

I wonder how did the angel get in to the Jar?Smiley

Hi Shane,

The angel may not be opal but mother-of-pearl (the lining of a shell). When you look at the side view you can clearly see the outer shell of marine calcite to which it is attached. From the thickness of the shell I'd guess that it's probably from a giant clam.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shane,

The Mark on the wine bottle is "均源" Jun yuan, I am pretty positive its not a chinese mark even they are chinese characters, it could be a Japanese ot Korean.

George,

It is always difficult to tell from photos, but the backing material sure looks like calcite to me, not the kind of matrix I'd expect to find associated with opal.
