Dear Pat,

You were right about the brush was invented by Lu school, but a little bit later than 40s.

According the book" inside painting" by An Peng sheng, the brush was invented by Xue Jingwang薛京万( Li Kechang's master) in 1958, he also invented "fired painted" so that the paint will not be damage by water.

In 1966, Li kechang 李克昌and Sun JiJie 孙即杰 and Xue Jingwang's nephew Xue XiXiang 薛希湘 went to Beijing to show Ye Bengqi's students how to use brush. From then on Jing school started to adopt brush painting.

Thanks Steven.  The CIPMA book chronicled it differently but yes Xue Jingwang was the name I was looking for. I need to check the exact reference in Chinese Painting in the Modern Age.

Wow, that's all very interesting. I assumed brushes had been 'invented' and used much earlier.
That makes the inside painting of the early and middle masters even more incredible.

You never know what will come up when you make a posting here. Thanks guys.

Hi All

Yes it's  correct.  I just  checked   my  DB  where  I have a   scan of  pages  46 / 47  about  Xue Jingwan.

For some reason    this particular  scan is  at very  low  resolution so it's  hard to read.
I will  re-scan  the pages  tomorrow  in my office  and  re-post

But  interestingly   Xue  Jingwan seems  to have  painted mainly   inside  vases  not  bottles....

Cheers

Peter
