Hello Pat and George,

Thank you, I am learning a lot from this forum and books.

Is that bottle "dated" 1930, produced similarly to the 2-3 "Ting ErZhong" on this older thread?
http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,671.0.html

If yes, why would they bother to fake a Tang Tzu Chuan signature in the 60s-80s? Looking at the sold price in 2011 and 2013 on Bontham, it would seem to me that going back 3-4 decades, his work is not well known or might even be considered minor. If they were volume producing the old masters, why would they put a more obscure artist?

Or if not, then is that one "dated" 1930 is a more recent one?

Best Regards,
David

Yes the wrong date is a clue to figure out the fakes but I an really not sure of intentional or not.

Hi David,

The most of Tang zichuan bottles were not dated, only less than 10 bottles dated between 1892-1900,  as Pat addressed its a clue to ID the fakes.

Altho Tang Zichuan  is not any top artist during the middle period, but his decent painted bottle should be valued $2000- $6000, then why not fake it? also some bigger names were faked too much, the obscure artist's signature can fool more people this way.

Hello Pat,

Thank you.

Hi Steven,

That's a good point  Smiley, never occurred to me that they would put so much thought into deceiving people. I think I understand now, aside from diversifying the names, the big names cost is high enough (even back then) that hiring a knowledgable appraiser/expert to verify is worthwhile. But a smaller name will not be cost effective to hire one.

Thank you,
David
