Here is a Jar I bought out of my curiosity.Smiley

Nothing fancy, but I do like the color combination, yellow black and white ,blue all well balanced.

Any comments and insights on the date will be appreciated.

Steven

The black application reminds me of some mid 20th century molded porcelain bottles I had a while back..

How tall is this Steven ?

Dear Steven,
I agree with George about the dating.
Black background porcelain is a famous ware of the Kangxi reign, but the genuine ones are quite rare. Most of the ones that we can see around, despite being decorated in Kangxi style, has been indeed made during Gunagxu. Some are plain replicas, among them same very very good, and some are genuine Kangxi famille verte items that has been fired again after adding the black enamel.
All that said, your small jar doesn’t have the shape nor some details, like the yellow in the flowers, that are odd. My feeling is that it is later than Guangxu, just a feeling because of the oddities.

Dear Steven-

I must agree with Giovanni on the dating of your jarlet.

The original Famille noire pieces of the Kangxi reign have an even black glaze whereas yours appears to be a bit "lumpy".  As Giovanni stated, the yellow is wrong as is the green.  The original pieces almost always have a slight "oil sheen" to the overglaze enamels which in certain lights reflects a rainbow effect.

All that being said, the jarlet is an interesting piece, whether it was made as a miniature copy of a larger piece or was made as a water holder is anyone's guess but interesting enough to add to a collection.

Best wishes,
Rick
