The horse doesn't look Chinese to me, more like a.... Trojan horse!

Yes....or maybe even a zebra!  Cool

Another example of bottle with the rebus, "May you be promoted to the rank of Marquis immediately", Ma Shang Feng Hou (马上封侯) theme.

A shadow agate bottle carved using the dark inclusions to depict a monkey dressed in official costume riding a horse.  The reverse left plain. Height: 60 mm.

Provenance: Floyd W. Ohliger

Enjoy!

Hi George

Thanks for moving this thread to the Themes, Scenes board.

However, I felt that it is unnecessary to create a Child Board for this as it is a thematic topic on its own and not a subset of Inside Painted Bottles.

Besides, what will happen if I add a horse related inside painted bottle in future (which I probably would)? Should it be placed at the Parent Board or in this Child Board? In any case, it will just complicate the hierarchy and ended in confusion. Either way, the additional level of the Child Board seems redundant.

As pointed out in some of my earlier posts, it will be good to maintain a streamlined structure so that information can be found easily at their appropriate sections. Easy accessible information will be both user friendly and helpful.

Just my opinion.

Regards.

I created the new board solely for you Richard..

I can't seem to get you to understand that "there is a basic hierarchy" already established, and to constantly try to add new and ( in my opinion ) unecessary boards for every imaginable bottle breaks up the harmony of the forum..

The following boards cover any kind of snuff bottle there are..  If it is a stone bottle, regardless of theme, it should find a home within the "Gem, Stone, Rock and Fossil" baord.  To continue and add new boards for rock bottles based on the great number of different themes breaks the continuity of the following basic categories that cover snuff bottles..

Inside Painted Bottles / Early, Middle and Modern Period Bottles
IP Artists of the Very Modern Period ( 1990 to Present )
Porcelain and Yixing Bottles
Gem, Stone, Rock and Fossil
Glass Snuff Bottles
Cloisonne Bottles
Enamel Painted Bottles
Organic, Metal, and Embellished Bottles
All Other Snuff Bottles and Containers

We have, and for good reason added a few specialized boards as related to IP and porcelain bottles..  Rightly so, as they make perfect sense and are needed..

Every time the forum "unnecessarily" breaks from the basic categories listed above, it opens the door for added difficulty in navagating, and knowing where to post a bottle..

I reluctantly created a new board for you when in fact all rock related bottles should go within the already established "Gem, Stone, Rock and Fossil" board regardless of subject matter..

Idealy, if we want to break up rock bottles into new categories, it makes more sense to simply create a desired topic/thread related to the desired subject matter.. Not new categories, boards, and or child boards..

It is important to keep the forum as simple to navigate and post accordingly as possible..

Hi George

That's exactly my point!

That is no need to create additional board and child board unless absolutely necessary. In fact, as you read my posts, I am against the idea of creating unnecessary board, if possible.

In this instance, there is already a section devoted to inside painted bottles. Therefore the simple solution is to rename the "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings as Related to Inside Painted and Porcelain Only" to just "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings in Snuff Bottle" and remove the child board "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings as Related To All Other Bottle Mediums That Are Not Inside Painted" and just move this thread to the main board.

Just my suggestion.

Regards.

Richard

P.S. Please do not create a board just for my postings unless really necessary. Thanks!

Sorry Richard, but I really want that to be for IP's only..   It is IP's that draw discussions related to ancient Themes, Scenes, Scrolls and Paintings

For subject matter on stone bottles, if for some reason a member did not want to post it within the Gem, Stone, Rock and Fossil  board, I think the "Symbolism and Meanings" board where motifs and symbolism will better cover it.

I just feel that scrolls, silk screens, etc best fit IP and porcelain discussions..

An inside painted bottle painted on both sides with copies of ancient Tang dynasty paintings.

One side painted with two men on horses after the painting by Tang dynasty artist, Han Yan. The top with an inscription: The Two Horses, painted in autumn, 1993 by Lu Jianguang.

The other side painted by another Tang dynasty painting, Tending to the horses by Han Gan. On the side is an inscription on the original painting by Song Hui Zhong, an emperor of the Song dynasty who is also a gifted artist and art collector. It reads: "Authentic painting by Han Gan" in his unique calligraphy style know as the Shou Jin Ti (Skinny Gold Style).

Frankly, I have a difficulty deciding where to place this post. If I post it here, it is the most relevant to the subject matter. However, the title of this child board reads: "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings as Related To All Other Bottle Mediums That Are Not Inside Painted".

Should I post it under the main board: "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, Silk Screens, and Paintings as Related to Inside Painted and Porcelain Only"? As there is no thread under the Horse Theme under this board, it which may results in creating a new (unnecessary) thread again.  Roll Eyes

I hope this will illustrate the issue which I have brought up earlier.

Regards.

Richard

It depends upon what it is about the bottle/painting that you either find most interesting, wish to talk about a certain apsect about, share and discuss the specific horse them, or just want to share it as an IP bottle in gerneral..

What is it that you want to discuss or share about the bottle ?

Since it is an IP bottle, you have already posted it in the wrong board, as this board is for " all other bottle mediums that are not inside painted ".. So regardless, this is the wrong board.

So you may want to post it within the "Inside Painted Bottles / Early, Middle and Modern Period Bottles" if you wish to simply share it as an IP.
Or if you have, or are looking for a scroll, or silk painting that matches your horse painting, then you would want to post it within the " Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, Silk Screens, and Paintings as Related to Inside Painted and Porcelain Only "..

Hope this helps..

Sorry to say, but I am just not feeling this new board, "Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings as Related To All Other Bottle Mediums That Are Not Inside Painted".

Here in a bit am going to remove it, and re-locate the topics within..

I think if everyone just does the best they can in posting where they think a bottle should go, then we should be ok...

I can move a topic to another board if better suited..
